.............So who else was there, what d'ya see, who d'ya bump into, where d'ya come, was it worth it, was it better than last year, what d'ya reckon?
We were there in what was probably the newest boat in the race - launched last Wednesday and handed over to us on Thursday. We had about 2 hours sailing her before the race start.
Very scary with my brand new shiny white GRP - especially the finish - went round in 10h25. Minor panic at the Needles when one of the crew found water above the floor in the aft cabin. That left us headed due south out to sea for about half an hour to keep the boat heeled while I went below and swabbed the bilge - confirming in the process that it was fresh water /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. The guys at Premier have promised to sort it out this week (Thanks again for comissioning the boat in time for the race!)
That left us way out in the foul tide more or less on our own watching the boats on the island shore streaming past.
Didnt feel confident to set the kite for the first time in those conditions either so we could probably shave about an hour off that time.
Very pleased with Nereid - our Elan 340 - with part furled headsails we were pegging a J109 with racing sails on the reach up the East of the island at 7/8/9 knots over the ground.
Finish at 1600 was madness - the tides had allowed all the fleets to close up and it was great (only in retrospect!!) close quarters sailing. We finished 90 out of 125ish in ISCclass4
Huge queue to declare and a fantastic day out /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif .

Great day although i could have won but when you sail with "a bit of fun" crew the day is more about learning and enjoying rather than focus and drive. But for me BEST leg was the Bembridge Ledge to Ryde sands post (latter) took the field 0.5 under the heel at times /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Probably a shrewd move. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
At 1300 we were sitting by the Ryde Sands post with the photographer and at least six yachts ran aground in quick succession. A few, I fancy, did not make their table reservations that night. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
We were there - 3 up with 4 sails to play with. Mizzen staysail and spinnaker earned their keep from Needles to Bembridge and we finished just before 1600 (9 hrs 18 minutes elapsed) which for a long keeled ketch nudging 11 tons on a 27ft waterline, we thought was quite respectable. Warm, dry and a good breeze - not a bad day out!
Well I got my boat launched Tuesday, and intended joining the race, a rather spectacular shakedown.
But 5 am Saturday morning the engine wont start, and once we did get it started at lunch time, it died 10 minutes later in the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, But we did get close enough to see the boats through the heavy downpour, and I will be there next year.
My sincere thanks go to Bajan Sailor and Ed who spent hours working on my engine to get it started, and accompanied me on my first trip out.
Had a great day and came third in class. Anyone know where I can find my overall position ?
Found the worst part of the day was trying to get to the declaration barge !
We went round in 8:44:54, an ok result. Still a good event though, although am going to take some convincing about stupid o'clock start times are worth continuing with again next year..
