We broke a genoa sheet and got wet. How about you?

No breakages but ended higher than last year but not as high as we'd have liked.

Things that went wrong.
1. Late over start line and went for the North side for clear air and watched the fleet in higher tide run sail away from us.
2. Went too wide at the Needles to avoid the port/starboard cofrontation and spent a good 10 mins sailing back to the Needles whilst still meeting boats that needed a good deal of reminding that we on starboard had right of way, including one that kissed us (f-ing incompentants was the nicest thing shouted at them but to be fair they did look like rabbits in the headlights when they realised that we meant starboard)
3. Tacking against a foul tide has never Rival Spirit's best quality and we watched the fleet move further off as we plodded from the Needles to St. Catherines point.

Things that went well
1. Roaring (7-8 knots boat speed) through the rough stuff in St. Catherines race
2. Terrific sail from St. Catherine's point for the rest of the race. Overtaking most of the back markers right up to the finishing line.
3. The calm at the finishing line overtaking quite a few and sharing some great sparring with the other crews.
4. The quality of the goodie bag at the end and the fact that it was delievered by rib quickly rather than that interminnable wait at the barge.
5. Falling into my bed completely shattered and 2 bottles better off at 10 pm.

In summary a great day's sail, even if the sun DNC.

Got wet for a very short spell while adjusting spinaker from a run to a better position for closer hauled work, then retreated back into the wheelhouse. A few minutes with the heating on soon sorted that out.

Biggest disaster was not staying close enough to the coast as I came around the needles. The leg from their to St Cats was a miserable one for me as my boat really does not go to windward very well, and cause I was not actually racing, but rather "following the racing enthisiastically" I stayed further out in the foul stream for much longer than I really wanted too. Still first time round and a time of 10.5 hrs was acceptable - I have no idea what the corrected time would have been as I dont know what my handicap was, but my crew could have been the problem:

Nothing personally, but .. the skipper from one of my clubs boats ejected himself off the boat after freeing a sheet snagged on the mast - saw them heading back to Cowes the wrong way afterwards. Also, sadly, another one of ours lost its mast at the needles - don't know why yet, though I don't believe anyone was hurt in that one.

Ah well,
Jeff.

Bad things -

1.Totally flat battery before the start, nearly didn't make it to the start, had to quickly plug into shore power for 10 minutes to put some power into the system whilst the whole raft inside of us fumed.

2. Burried in the pack at the start, had to go low to find wind so lost a lot of the tide.

3. Hung onto the number 1 far too long.

4. Blew a genoa sheet

5. Blew genoa Halyard, just went bang and the sail fell down.

6. All this p*ssing about with headsails meant we didn't get as close to the coast between the needles and st Cat's as we would have liked.

7. Forced into a crash tack by some complete ****er of a big beneteau who simply stood on even though we saw him looking at us. #

8. Battery flat again at the finish, suffered the ignomity of being towed into cowes by the harbour master

Good things.

1. Found clean air in the middle of the solent and made a load of places

2. went through the inner gap and missed all the solid stuff!

3. Timed the kite hoist to perfection after st Cats and rolled a lot of boats

4. Found clean air in the east solent and sailed past quite a few boats.

5. That screaming kite reach from the fort to the finish

6. Sailed round all the parked boats at the finish to gain about 10 places

7. It was simply awesome fun!

Must have been a great day for the race, although, from what we heard on vhf, HMCG, RNLI and Freshwater Lifeboat were kept busy. SWMBO and meself, accompanied by a couple of dinghy sailing friends (newbies to the salty stuff) set off behind the fleet for Poole and had a cracking sail. 11knts on the log as we rounded Poole Bar Buoy and surfed down the channel. Must say we were pretty well humbled by Orange when she passed us off Newtown Creek (was she going around again?)

Brilliant weekend congrats to all forumite who took part.

Apparently they went for a second round to try and beat the record, again unsuccessfully. I didn't notice her at any time, too busy I suppose.

Great time.

Was about 3 min behind the line for our 7:20 start
Managed the turn at the Needles perfectly.
Found the Beat to St Cath hard going under reefed main
Saw two boat anchored to Lobster Pots.
Did not try to fly the kite at all as the potential hassles far outweighed the potential benefit.
Approaching the finish we had to edge to windward to stop a big gaffer from stealing our wind across the line, so got a lot more shadow from the island than we would have liked.
8:43 elapsed , 8:17 corrected.
Now I just need to get my body back in order.

Yes, happy with that for a first go /forums/images/icons/smile.gif, needed to be more pro-active with spinaker changes on east side of island and drag race to finish. At the end of the day we were all too tired, and so lost some ground in the last hour or so of the race.

The good:

- really fast race, with lots of fast reaching
- great atmosphere (as always)

The bad:

- 3 hours on the leg to St Cat's - foul tide and too much wind on the nose
- crew new to the boat, so sail changes were too slow

The ugly:

- worst result ever at 523rd!

Lighter winds and a later start would have suited me better.
