I thought I would check the oil in the gear box it looked like it was just on the bottom line of the dipstick. So I topped it up to the top line I ran it for a couple of days and it started making a noise in reverse a couple of times so I pulled over.
I was wondering if the oilruns off the dipstick as I un screw it giving a false reading. I am in the middle of nowhere and worried. Any help would be appreciated

Are you sure that you are supposed to screw in the dipstick? Screw in dipsticks are normally are normally only rested on the gear case.

Either way, I doubt whether slight overfilling would lead to the gearbox making a noise in reverse. Are you sure that it's the gearbox and not something like a shaft coupling, rope cutter, shaft bearing etc?

Thanks I realise now I shouldn’t of screwed the dipstick in.
thanks

If the dipstick was not meant to be screwed in, you have put too little oil in the gearbox rather than too much. There is a possibility that too little oil would cause the mechanical noise. All you can do is fill it to the correct level and see if that stops it.

Most likely not a prob arising from a little overfilling of oil which could damage seals. If oil is in place, look to the prop and fouling from debris in the water. So safe to proceed slowly until you dry out and check your gear.
