My 20 year old Silva 1000 bulkhead compass has finally given up the ghost. The plastic sphere is heavily crazed and there is a large bubble inside. I'm trying to find a comparable modern compass that will replace it with the minimum amount of modifications to the holes in the bulkhead. Does anybody know of either a suitable compass or a good source of detailed specifications for bulkhead compasses showing dimensions, drilling paterns, etc?
The old compass is 125mm square with 4 bolts at the corners of a 110mm square. There is only about 35mm depth available behind the bulkhead before the compass hits the cabin deck liner moulding.

There was a bulkhead compass built by Sestrel (who were taken over by SIRS Navigation) that would be close to the sizes you mention. I'm not sure if they still manufacture them new but they do come up second hand reasonably regularly.
Hope this helps.

Good afternoon
I need to replace an old 1000 Silva LB bulkhead compass on my Hallberg-Rassy 29, so exactly the same as yours in your article of 2008.
Been shopping around and nearest one I have come up with is Garmin Silva 100 BH, which requires an octagonal hole in the bulkhead, but this would be bigger than the existing 90mm round hole and I have plenty of space at the back, as the Garmin required 85mm behind and fits flush on the front, unlike the old compass which sticks out.
I would be grateful for any advice you can offer.

Crikey that takes me back! Don't think I can help you because I managed to find a good second-hand Silva 1000 to replace the old one.
