Looking to move my 11.4 meter sail boat to Royan or Rochefort, anybody keeping their boots down there with opinions or information that would be helpful, would love to hear your views. Thanks Cliff

I personally would choose Rochefort because it’s a lovely town with plenty going on. If looking at Eoyan I’d also take a look across the river at Port Medoc, I’d much rather be there than in Royan.

Port Medoc is (was) a lot less crowded than Royan. Nice showers. Good walks around and a short walk to the ferry to Royan.

Royan is a larger town with a lot more facilities. Sadly it was flattened by the Allies with much of the town centre destroyed hence the new church. Superb fish and veggie market and a couple of chandlers. You can enter and leave at any state of the tide.

Rochefort is a lot smaller and the marina is some distance from the town centre. Nice boaty community but a bit landlocked being some way up the river and tidal. Not many places to visit by boat---

Surprised at that statement as I would have put it the other way around. With the Ile's and La Rochelle in the immediate vicinity I think there are plenty of places to visit. However you do have to negotiate the river every time - it is nice though.

I lived ashore there for many years. First in La Rochelle then Saujon & Royan... I wintered my boat sometimes in Rochefort and found it quite small and a bit of a treck to the small town centre. Also the marine facilities in Rochefort are somewhat limited... But it is inexpensive, secure and a pleasant place. Royan has got an extensive marina and a couple of chandlers as well as being quite a buzzy place all year round. Beautiful beach and superb covered market but of course its all a matter of taste.
La Rochelle knocks them both ito a cocked hat. Beautiful place. I used to have a house near the Vieux Port and have very fond memories of living there
