can anybody give me some advice as to which routine checks (between services) I should be making in the engine compartment.

So far, I am aware to check the raw water strainer fortnightly, visible signs of water / oil / diesel leaks daily (or just before I fire her up at the weekend) and also belt tension / wear.

But what about filters, fuel being the one that concerns me the most - both my first stage and second stage housings are neither glass nor transparent, so to check these would presumably require removal and hence bleeding the system - so how often should they be checked - if at all / and if so can the filters be reused?

<font color=blue>Your primary filters need only be checked on regular services unless you suspect a problem there. The secondary filters are rarely a problem anyway. The Strainers... personally I never bother unless {a} I am overheating {b} I have run through some awful dross that could be sucked in. The belt tensions, well how often do you check your car's?
Finally, glass viewers are no longer allowed under BSS regulations which is why you have to have opaque ones. Although no one has heard of a problem from these the dudes who thought up the daftness of the BSS thought it would be a good idea to add that to the other nonsense.

thx Byron

re; the belts and car analogy, I can always roll to a halt on the hardsoulder of the motorway and moan about the belt going (never had one go yet, mind), but having just one engine in the boat and no hardshoulder along the Orwell - with huge ferries and the like navigating the narrow channel - well, just like to do my best to keep her purring...
