Because as others have pointed out. The way you ask the questions make it quite plain that you just dont know the right questions to ask and are looking at things quite to simplisticly. You ask if you need charts and do they show sandbanks. The answer to both is most definally yes, regardless of what ever electronic aids you might have. In any event you need to be able to understand what the information is telling you be it electronic or paper. As a for instance neither electronic nor paper charts can ever understand the type of boat you have, it's draft seaworthiness or the compitence of it's crew. So how can it plot a course for you??

I dont want it to plot a course for me Im saying that once a course is plotted it has the info to let me know possible dangers on that route, I dont expect it to sit in the helm seat and drive it for me! it doesnt need to know the boat Im using I plot the course based on my boat the plotter points out possible factors on that chosen route for example tide heights at the time im passing, underlying rocks etc.the plotter doesnt have to know my draft for example it just points out that at this point at this time the depth will be however deep etc, the final error to the route ive chosen would be soley mine, my decision rightly or wrongly based on my intended destination, boat and conditions.

Now Now Simp. Dont yet yer nickers in a twist!! When you have had some experience of the sea, you will understand why your suggested computer programed route planner would be of little help. Maybe even dangerous.

Now come on. You havecome here with obviouly no experience and try to tell us what we should be doing. Then wonder why some of the answers are not to your liking. Hang around Listen and take advice. Theres a hell of alot of help here if your willing to listen. But please dont bit the hands that are trying to feed you witha better understanding. Now chear up and pay attention.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

No Im happy to learn but less sarcasm with the info would be appreciated and a less high handed attitude which isnt warranted- ive seen a lot of you guys trying to moor up!! whats with the lack of hand / eye coordination with mariners? You give me the info Ill process it

I havent tried to tell anybody what to do I dont care what anyone else does , I was purely raising a point I wanted info on, not people making character assesments if i want that Ill post 'character assessment wanted' (keep a look out for that and then feel free to label me in any way you want!)

and i do appreciate the time people have spent responding its the way they have responded which is annoying.

Yes my trollmeter twitched as well.

I then thought that perhaps SimP just became v touchy on his debut here because he thought the little jibes were aimed at him.

Note for SimP : the 2 sarcastic comments were replies to other posters - you can see this from a threaded view or by seeing who the posts actually replied to. The only sl sarcastic one about flower arranging WAS undeserved but I am sure that in retrospect if you read your first post again you will see it intimates you do/did not know about shoals, sandbanks (? the Goodwin sands) or buoys let alone offshore islands. I am sure you are not stupid but 'Autoroute' does keep one to the roads whereas shallow draft boats do not have to keep to deep water so a marine nalagy would be very different. Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Glad it wasn't just me - I read this damm thing half a dozen times to find this 'sarcasm'.
I also thought tcm's post worthy of a comendation for clarity and sense against the initial post - but clearly not what was being asked for unfortunately.

If it helps Simon can I suggest a small example of why the two key defined information sets, tide and chart, benefit from being kept apart until combined with weather and time -
firstly your chart is already to a significant degree already delivering all the information ie it's colour coordinated for go/no go areas but, as you suggest the electronic versions could be mapped to tidal heights, add a boat draft datum and you would think you have an even more useful tool to plot your route from a->b however you might well find that a small unforseen delay (they happen at sea for the funniest of reasons from stopping to look at a dolphin to going back to recover a blown of hat) suddenly results in a reroute back the way you came as your all singing all dancing programme now predicts you need to go faster than possible to travel along a channnel that will now be too shallow so you have to go the long way round.......as above but the overfalls off one headland are so great as a result of wind over tide that you are forced to slow down etc

Generally it already takes only a few moments (seconds) to physically plot the most straight forward route on either a paper or electronic chart and another minute or two to consider tidal heights and direction so as to finalise your 'selected' route with this process using the brain to input the variables applicable to that days priorities; even at only 149 a formidable computer.

I think another issue here is that pleasure boating is rarely about a singular efficient route from a ->b and, as you observed in the post re Poole/Cowes, there are both personal and technical factors in any trip. Expand the proposed trip to, say, Cowes to Falmouth and despite there being one technical solution for a given craft on given days there will be whole host of factors to combine for the best experience and enjoyment.

I hope you and your cruiser have many enjoyable trips

ps BTW I loved the one about keeping your eyes open to see the wreck - I think the suggestion was around uncharted (recent) submerged hazards.........../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Si,

Wrecks are often submerged and therefore out sight. The have a habit of being in shallow water, thus although out of sight may not be out "striking the bottom of your boat" depth, which in turn may depend on the height of the tide at the time. Furthermore, charts are not re-issued (or purchased?) just because of one new wreck so what you buy, whether paper or electronic, can be out of date. The former should come with all the latest corrections, listed in purple ink by hand at the bottom. At best electronic charts are only updated yearly unless the user updates them him/herself from Notices to Mariners.

Unless using official electronic charts, of course, in which case electronic corrections are issued regularly; 4 weekly in the case of NZ (but because our electronic charts are issued essentially free it is no dearer to buy a complete new set every 2 months than it is to subscribe to the corrections - I buy a whole new set of charts annually).

Be fair though, sometimes entering waypoints/routes into your plotter can be a PITA and being able to download would have its (limited) uses. I felt that way when I first started using one. But there are, as has been said, far too many variable for this to be viable, unless the route has minimal variables such as weather, tide etc.

Grand Union Canal anyone?
:)

Re: Nobel Prize

Why thank you Haydn!

I'm glad you found it oil on troubled waters, actually I did tap out a much longer reply earlier and then trashed it rather than post it but tico's troll sensor made me do it again in an abridged form. In fact the original DID blame you for the flower arranging idea as being the one that may have tripped SimP but I did go on to say that your posting style takes some time to get used to. - There you are, you can have some of the blame so I suspect the Nobel recedes again!

BTW Thank you Duncan
it is reassuring that others had to look repeatedly for the offensive "wit"
I also thought that tcm's 2 replies were extremely helpful, appropriate and insightful

Whoa

Okay, enough enough

Your original post looked to be a bit of a spoof for some of the people that spend far too long on here (me included, probably). You got the usual unfortunate treatment, which I try to dissuade but seems to happen anyhow.

However, it generally doesn't get resolved by slinging insults around so can we cool it on all sides please? For anyone that needs a refresher the Ts and Cs about abuse of fellow forum users is in here somewhere...
