I heard that out of 800 yachts that started the RTIR on Saturday only 240 finished. I'm no yachty but there was a strong easterly wind for most of the day that then veered to a south westerly late in the afternoon. I guess that meant then that apart from a down wind leg from Cowes to the Needles, they'd be sailing into the wind all the way. The majority of non-finishers just gave up apparently. It must have been a real slog.

Little wind E for later starters & died completey between Yarmouth & the Needles, with most of the fleet getting pushed by tide west of Shingles.. When it did recover, it got some boats as far as Freshwater, then died again, so at 3pm it didn't seem worth another 6hrs+, so most headed back via the Needles Channel. Strangely little wind south of Needles, but between Needles & Hurst blowing a F4/5, with nothing when just inside Hurst.
