Hi,

Just wondering what the rough going rate for a service on a pair of Volvo Penta TAMD61A engines would be.

They have been laid up for 2-3 years and we had one started today albeit with A LOT of smoke but that may have been down to the oil sprayed in the cylinders before being laid up.

Cost to include all filters, etc...

Any info would be helpful so I know I'm paying in the ballpark.

Thanks!

Hi,I think what your asking is a huge question imho,do you want a VP engineer to do it? Or a good engineer in your area ?
It might be worth having a look what a major service kit costs for each engine,as a start, then how long it will take to do the work, and what hourly rate the engineer is going to charge maybe.
If the engines have been stood for a long time, they could have other issues, that a major service may not cure.
IMHO.

Lantic Lass reply is pretty spot on. Price will vary dramatically pending on who does the work, and whether you use OEM parts or not.
Tamd61a is fairly simple to do basic service on. This would include per engine:
Oil filter x 1
Oil 20 litres (spec is VDS 3, VDS 2 no longer available it seems).
Fuel filter Racor for primary x 1 (Best place to buy is company called Hyphose ).
Fuel filter for secondary, located on engine x 2.
Air filter x 2.
Crank case breather x 1.
Anode in gear oil cooler x 1.
Impeller x 1.
Drive belts x 2.

Companies you can look at for prices are;

In line filters will give an OEM equivalent if you enter the volvo-penta part number to search.
Also bear in mind, price for oil varies drastically depending where you source it. Just make sure it meets the VDS 3 spec.

I'd stick with original parts, except the oil and anode. The price difference isn't great in the scheme of things but that way you know it's right. For example, the previous owner of my boat used aftermarket air filters and unlike the Volvo ones they didn't have solid reinforcements on the sides so they didn't seal fully around the edges. They're a fiver more each from Keypart but actually do the job of keeping dirt out of the engine.
