Hi Friends,

first week on our new boat. Arrived to find the stern bulk head full of water, culprit found to be leaking screw hatch that leads to emergency steering. Balsa core surrounding is rotten, haven’t quite established how far the rot goes. Assuming it’s could have followed some cracks following gravity and spread downwards too. I don’t seam to be so good at hearing the difference when tapping.

my guess is I need to grind back as far as the rotten basal goes, replace balsa and re fibreglass . I’m a total newby when it comes to fibreglass so looking for options or recommendations before I start grinding away.

sounds like this could develop into a big job for you; i do wonder if you should get someone with more experience to look before going any further. If the boat is new to you then I might start with the surveyor you employed at purchase (assuming you did)

Sounds like very sound advice. Thank you

OTOH, if the price didn't warrant a survey, you've just got to get on with it. It's going to be messy and dispiriting, but it isn't overwhelmingly difficult. Start off by googling Boatworkstoday Transom, where you'll find out how someone who knows what he's doing does it.
