Moored on the Orwell on a buoy just North of Woolverstone marina is a rather pretty yacht by the name of Rose Rambler. I passed her on my way upstream on Weds and wondered if it was Bartons well travelled vessel designed by Laurent Giles. She is about the right length (35') and looks very well cared for.
Has anyone else noticed this boat for she is indeed quite famous if I have the correct vessel.

That's "Rose Rambler of Devon", built in 1973:

Dom thanks for the confirmation. She was built in Wroxham, Norfolk in 1950 and voyaged the oceans for many years with "Hum" Barton. He wrote a couple of books and was a contemporary of the Pardys, Haslar, Hiscocks etc all of whom greatly contributed to the dream of voyaging in small boats.

Slightly later actually, in 1963. It was "Vertue XXXV" which he had built (by Elkins) in 1950, and sailed across the Atlantic. Saw Vertue XXXV a few years back in Venice, of all places, looking very well cared-for: lots of flawless varnish that wouldn't have looked out of place on a Riva.

Amazing how many of the boats sailed by the inspirational sailors and authors of that era are still going strong: I believe all the Hiscocks' "Wanderers" are still afloat, as are both of Hum Bartons', and both of the Pardys'. Several of Maurice Griffiths' boats are still in commission (Storm, Nightfall, Kylix). I happened to see "Peter Duck" in Wells harbour a few weeks ago - all of Ransome's yachts are still cruising, except Racundra, which was wrecked in Caracas in 1978.

Yes of course, 1963 built. Some fantastic voyages made by small boats over the next ten years, Dr David Lewis in the Vertue and other yachts, the Smeatons, John Guswell on Trekka....it gave rise to my dreams. Peter Duck is kept on a mooring at Waldringfield, on the Deben.

Classic Sailor mag noted she had to be rescued by the RNLI when leaving Wells and the engine failed, prompting the headline "We didn't mean to go to sea" etc.

Storm would be in commission but it's engine seized on the Old Gaffers week & a new Beta about to be ordered.

Talking of boats with East Coast connections, is Grace O'Malley (Libby Purves' and Paul Heiney's boat) still around? It was the book "One Summer's Grace" that got me and my wife into boating. Wonderful book. Phrases from it often wander happily round my mind like poetry. We used to read about ocean voyaging but that just frightened us, then we read Libby's book and bought a boat.

Ian: Nooooo...not that lovely old Kelvin. Another one bites the dust...

Two Hooter: "Grace O'Malley" is now under German ownership, painted in traditional pilot cutter livery and re-named "Wolke 7", but still carries her original sail number.

thanks dombuckley for posting that. We did indeed sell her to a German, in Cuxhaven, but have heard nothing of her since. Nice to see her again.

Hi! Grace O`Malley has her first name back and is sailing in Hamburg on the River Elbe. My little son and me, we are very happy with her!
