Before I start - I completely understand rope types and sizes so I am not looking for comments on that :)

I'm curious, does anyone know what kind of rope La Vagabonde has on board? It looks very nice (colour and pattern wise) and I'd like to find some like it. So far I've found loads of dinghy string, and I found the Blue Ocean stuff from Marlow, some kingfisher stuff too, but none seems to come in the colourways they have on board so clearly I'm missing some options. Their Outremer is French so perhaps it's a local brand?

Thanks all!

I just thought someone here might have an idea :) I've no interest in buying a million dollar catamaran so might be a weird question for Outremer, and I suspect Riley neither knows nor cares who made the ropes as long as they aren't chaffed :D

Lots of high-end Liros dyneema on eBay at present. Not sure if it's Vagabond level of expensive originally(!), but their top-end models like Racer/XTR/Magic that retail up to £15 can be had for around £2 - £2.50 a metre. Yes, really! Liros are as good a manufacturer as any, too, IMO.

PM me if you want a link to a trusted supplied who I recently acquired all our new running rigging from. I reckon the total would be close to £3000+ 'retail' for less than £500 spent.

[edit: ...and very pretty colours/patterns from Liros too - every combo under the sun, really. The first mate's favourite is the 'London Underground seat patter' Regatta dyneema - mine is the 'sawtooth silver' V-Force vectran!!!)

Interesting. Do you know if the rope you have is actually Liros? i ask because we nearly had a serious accident when the outer covering of a 14mm dynema rope failed & the core slid through the rope releasing a 2.5 ton load. The section that slipped was actually on a cleat so the inner dynema , which was undamaged) was wound several times around it. The outer covering remained on the cleat. Cost was circa £ 3-00 per M & purchased from a local Chandler.
The SWL of 14mm cruising dynema should well over 2.5Ton. It was a nearly new rope with no sign of damage. It had also broken in the middle where it went round a shackle

I've been watching some Liros 'dyneema' end of reel lengths on ebay for a week or so, the problem I'm having is that the seller seems suitably vague about which spec it's supposed to be, other than it's 'Liros dyneema' which has kind of made me a bit nervous

Don’t be put off... Liros have a few traders (think boat jumble...) who they sell their manufacturing end-of-reels to. Given their huge range, the sellers usually don’t bother identifying the type/spec. At those low prices, and high volumes (compared to chandlery reel ends) it’s just not worth their time marketing them this way.

Just use the current Liros catalogue and match up the pictures from the eBay listing. Each pattern/colour combo are unique and it’s not too hard to match them with a bit of imagination!

99% sure that’s not a Liros cover. The pattern just doesn’t match anything they do.

It’s easy to identify genuine Liros from the method I describe above. The complexity of the cover designs just couldn’t be faked and -once you get to know the relevant ranges - it’s impossible to mistake genuine Liros.

Each dyneema (Regetta, Racer, XTR, Magic, etc.) has a unique cover pattern or colour combo.

Sorry . I did not mean to give the impression that my rope was Liros. rather that cheap rope is not always what one thinks it is. the chandler thinks it is marlow because he only buys marlow but buying from a wholesaler he may have been given something a bit different. I bought 70 metres from him & he bought in as special order, not as a reel.

Here's some of Christina's new running rigging - all genuine Liros dyneema - mixture of Racer XTR (best spec but slippy cover), Racer-Hybrid (nice!), Regatta and Racer (both notably more grippy to handle) and Dynamic (so-called 'cruise' dyneema, with a cover that handles to all intents and purposes like regular poly braid).

Jimmy Green Marine seems to list a lot of different colour ropes.
I've had a good look on there but not found the ones I'm after yet. The actual rope doesn't matter too much as BoB would be fine for my boat but I'd be comfortable spending more for nice looking ropes. I can't find anything in a UK shop that matches so assume it must be a foreign brand

Ah, I got you now! Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I recognise that cover pattern from among the various unbranded cheap dyneema on eBay etc. 14mm at 2.5 tonne, to be honest, wouldn't surprise me that stuff failed. Core might be dyneema, but no telling that the cover isn't made in the same way as a cheapest of the cheap poly braid-on-braid.

The highest breaking dyneemas get the extra strength from the cover, with a mix of Vectran and 32-plait. You won't find that on any of the cheaper dyneema-cored lines.

The red/white is closest although they seem to have red/black in a similar scheme which looks much nicer. I realise this is sad, but I have more time for shopping than sailing right now :D
Perhaps sir would care for something like this ('Magic Control XTR')?! The only red and black I can think of...

And yes, tell me about it! If anyone else has been trying to buy spinlock clutches, decent size/spec blocks, or - of course - dyneema on eBay the past few months, I apologise...!

I think that might actually be the one. The reason I may have missed it on JimmyGreen is it's £20/m so I guess I'll buy some braid on braid and a sharpie then pay a street urchin to colour my ropes in by hand :D

Don’t worry, it’ll turn up on eBay sooner or later. Basically when Liros make the next batch and have some reel-ends of that to flog.

But yes, at £20 it might be a while before the next run!
