Just fitted a Lofrans vertical windlass and am about to buy 30m of 8mm calibrated chain.

Will the windlass handle any rope I splice to the chain? If it does, is any particular type better - eg Anchorplait?

I can see that the rope may well be grabbed by the gypsy, but will it fall into the anchor locker under its own weight?

TIA

no choice..

assuming you have a proper rope/chain gypsy, you must use 3-strand nylon rope as multiplait is too soft for the groove to grip. i believe the rope size is 12 mm but i would check with the suppliers of the windlass. splice the rope through the last link in the chain, 2 strands passing through in one direction, the other strand the opposite way. make sure the hole in the deck allows the splice to pass through without snagging (mine tends to catch and jam as the splice goes through so i will be enlarging the hole this winter.
