Hi last day tommorow for boating for 5 weeks due to liverpool lock closure for essential maintenance. Going to go into deeper water and as i have 50 metres of chain and only ever had to use chain to anchor because of the depths, but i was wondering if the attached rope ( a further 20m) would work in the windlass.Must admit i have never looked into how the windlass works i just know that i need to keep the clutch tight as one time chain just flew through!!

I would be grateful for any views on this.

Many thanks in advance

Mike

Some windlasses are designed to work with rope and chain, there should be a narrowing groove in the centre of the gypsy which will trap the rope, and allows it to work with different sizes of rope. The rope needs to be spliced directly onto the chain, not onto a shackle or tied with a knot.
