After having a bit of a scare with my in-mast furling whilst at sea (as in the rope broke leaving the mizzen full out) I realised one skill I really need to master is rope splicing.

Does anyone know of a good book with excellent and easy to follow illustrations worth purchasing? Failing that a good website with printable guides would do the trick.

Thanks!

Samson ropes do a very good set of downloadable splicing instructions - easily understandable - see Samson Ropes for more details.

As per the previous posts which has given you good advice, there was a very good series in the PBO one or two years ago by a very good "Master of the art" which you may find useful. Sadly, I learn't to splice when I was young with traditional ropes which (IMHO) had a certain logic but the modern ropes do, I must admit, confuse me whem it comes to splicing. However, I think that is because I have never been in the presence of anyone splicing a modern rope and I'm sure that If I was, i could emulate the task.

Regards.

Are we talking eye splice on laid or braid on braid?
Laid - piece of pish
Braid - ok on new rope, difficult on used rope

If the missen is still fully deployed, I assume it wasn’t too difficult to drop it?
