I've got an Ambassador Marine "Stripper", and I can assure you that on two occasions it worked properly and got us out of the 5h1t or ... .... .. - (9dits and a dah).
It has one fixed cutter, and three (in my case, or two on a two blade prop) rotating cutters. When one of the rotating cutters comes up against the fixed cutter - it cuts!! I have even cut my own mooring dann buoy - fibreglass. All that was left was the float!
There is also one called the Spurs. Similar but with a horn shaped cutter instead of the serrated cutter of the Stripper.
Some slice, some snip and some cut like pinking shrears. Rope not wire.
Ambassador marine make a pretty nifty bit of gear that is easy for a DIY fit. And it works. I have used Spurs too on a previous boat - ok but the Ambassador pinking shears action is more dependable, and the bearings last a whole lot longer than the Spurs, and are good for S legs too.
Get one - is there anyone out there who ever thought a cutter a waste of time - I have yet to meet or hear of him!
PBO published an article on fitting the SPURS about 10 years ago. If you contact the Editorial dept in Poole they should be able to get you a copy for a small cost.
And one of the sailing mags (can't remember which) published a comparison between the various manufacturers just a year ago. The Ambassador Marine unit came out on top with the Spurs second. Both excellent units. I have used an Ambassador on two boats - never had a problem - would just say that if you are fitting yourself or even getting someone else to fit, it is essential to have the retaining screw loctite glued when screwed home. There have been a few instances where this has not been done and the rope-cutter and propellor have departed the shaft!
I used a Spurs and now have a Harold Hayles which I prefer. Has been used twice in anger, once in mid channel and once on my own mooring line - so I know it works.
Spares are readily available and the service is good.
You will find Harold Hayles at Yarmouth Isle of Wight - sorry don't have telephone number.
I have just looked at both websites mentioned above as i was thinking of fitting one myself. Jeez they are expensive though arent they. When contemplating six month trip I allowed for some extras but these 200/300 pstg lumps soon mount up! Has anyone tried the flat circ spinning blade type which is under 100pstg??
Replies appreciated.
Thank's for all the help, I've decided to go for the Ambassador stripper & getting it fitted today. Hoping to get over to St Vaast at the weekend, forecast looks good.
I fitted a spinning disc Proprotector which I am replacing after three seasons with an Ambassador stripper. I found that the Proprotector was not that good with plastic sheets, the biggest menace in my area. Also the Proprotector had become rather blunt. I decided that it was wisest to invest in the "best" protection even though very expensive. So anyone want a used blunt Proprotector for a 25mm shaft?
