planning continues:

am planning to leave our Westerley in the Rome area for about 3 weeks in mid to late September (en route greece).

We are after any recommendations (or otherwise!) - as per usual looking for security /reasonable cost / relatively convenient although happy to do without luxuries.

Back to the UK and then continue voyage early October.

Thanks in advance

From my experiences, year-before last, when I returned, I'm afraid you'll probably be disappointed on all three criteria.

Try Darsena Traiana, on the S side of Fiumicino, then the yards above the road bridge.

Alternative is the marina at Ostia - but make sure you're away from the entrance.

Finally Gaeta - the last meets two of the criteria, but is probably full.

Italy is in the midst of a boatong boom and the infrastructure hasn't caught up - it's therefore the most overcrowded and, probably, the most expensive country in Europe to try and berth a yacht.

The saving grace is the time you've chosen - Italian boats are starting to come out and there may be some free berths afloat.

We're currently in Riva de Traiana, about 30 miles north of Rome by Civitavechia. We'd come in looking for a place to leave Rampage whilst we went back to UK for a wedding; no problems with a berth for 2 weeks, got a slight reduction with the length of stay (7 days for the price of 6) and not too over the top on cost (60euro a night for a 12m boat). Reasonable facilities, water and electicity included, bus stop outside to Rome and train station about 40 minutes walk away.
The only problem is the distance to the shops - about 1.5 km - but we use the bikes so not a problem. Small store on site for bread, water etc.
Hope thats of some use to you - we were worried coming in towards Rome, as we couldn't get any of the marinas to respond to an email and phone call hit a brick wall of no English being spoken......
Security on the other hand is minimal - good perimiter fence but guard hut lets just about anyone in. Didn't even check our taxi the other night as we came back in but that's pretty standard for this part of the world. Calvi doesn't even have a fence!

We are in Porto Di Roma/Ostia right now. 45 night/270 week for 10m. Left boat here for a week for visit to UK. Security seems fine and they responded to email and there seems to be a lot of space. Also good to visit Rome.

Ostia

It's a long while ago now but we spent a very happy winter at Ostia Antica, last place on the right just before the bridge close to the tower. Then a family run mini-marina and mamma ran the cantina where marvellous pasta ai cozze were served at lunchtime.
Very nice people then and much cheaper than the more formal places nearby.
