I have an old, but still working fine, reefing gear. It is very similar to the old style rotostay that has a top swivelling bearing that the forestay attaches to. The halyard is a wire rope that runs through a sheave in the top swivel bearing.
Question is, how safe is the top bearing. It doesnt seem to have much play, hardly moves. Does anyone know if the swivel bearing will be made in such a way that if the bearings did fail the mas wouldnt come down?
I can raplace the forestay with no problem, but if this tp swivel bearing is a weak point then it is not worth persuing with. I have found nobody willing to service the bearing.
Bit of a longshot, but any help grately received.
