I while back while looking through sails websites I came across an advert for a sail cover for a roller headsail - apparently it can be hoisted then drawn tight with a vertical lacing arrangement.
Unfortunately I didnt note the site and cant find it again.
Does anyone out there know who makes these?
Thanks,
Alan

I also considered having one made last year but advice from apparently honest sailmaker(s) was to forget it - and when leaving the boat for any period long enough to worry about UV damage, to take the sail down.

They all cited examples of covers self destructing and possibly resultant sail damage in the event of strong winds. All offered to make / sell me one if I wanted.............but no one recommended I took them up on it.

We have used one for the last three years when leaving the boat for any length of time. No damage as yet, and it does save the UV strip.

From what I have seen in the Med cruisers often struggle to deploy or remove these things and they can be a real pain in the neck. More importantly if there is a big blow on and there is noise of a loose sail or cover in the marina/port it is invariably one of these sail covers then they self destruct quite quickly - then even more difficult to get down. I think the problem is that if they are made large enough to easily deploy then there is too much loose fabric to get slapped about by the wind and eventually loosen/break the drawstring. If they are made nice and snug they are difficult to deploy or drop. I'd stick with the UV strip on the sail and then remove the sail if away for long periods.

I watched one of these things self-destruct in a gale. The noise and shaking was alarming and there must have been significant stress on the rig and damage to the sail. Other boats with properly secured rolled headsails were perfectly ok.

Thanks for the comments - enough to make me think seriously.
I was mainly trying to be a cheapskate - fitted RR to an older boat and hoped to use a cover instead of UV strips on existing sails.
Maybe OK for that as would only lose an older sail - a bit concerned about the possible rig damage idea though.
