hi all when you change from hank on forsails sails to fuler system can you use any of your old forsails say the largest one on the furler system or do you have to buy a new sail ??
I got slug sliders with the same diamater as the bolt robe. Fed them into the furler and attached with the hanks.. Not the best way but works fine for me.
If you want to furl the sails then they will most likely need to be recut to roll properly most furling sails are cut much higher for this reason
the slug idea seems good to allow the old sails to be used but I would check with the foil people that they would be happy with the different loading
it would seem to give the advantage of being able to drop a sail without it going all over the place if you could not roll it
A friend of mine has the luff slugs arrangement and likes it for the reason you give, i.e. the ability to control the sail when hoisting and lowering, as you can with a hanked-on type.
I am quite keen on adopting the idea, so that I could use different sail sizes as needed, but what worries me is whether the luff groove on the alloy foil would stand up to the high spot loading at each slug. Obviously the more slugs you use the better the load distribution but if you have too many you end up no better off.
Also s/s slugs in an alloy foil might cause corrosion if the sail is left rolled up for any length of time.
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have Plastimo 406 R/R, and am trying to source sail slugs to go with it. I think the luff groove is about 6mm. Anyone know where I might get some suitable slugs?
Thanks. I'll try them.
I was out with a friend last weekend who is using the slugs for his jib as he has just fitted the R/R. We had no problems in light winds for a couple of hours (just using it to furl, not to reef), and this is what persuaded me, to give me more sail options.
