Rogue wave?

Nah. Just normal North Sea winter conditions.

At 09:14hrs this morning, a 19.6 metre wave was recorded passing under a platform at 61 deg North, 1 deg East in the northern North Sea. Mind you, at the time, the significant wave height was 10 metres plus and it had been blowing 60 to 70 knots for 18 hours. The weather is expected to get worse this afternoon as well.

It has got worse!! Even the plaform is rocking about now!! The scarabeo semi has been abandoned, with just a skeleton crew aboard!! Still I've and i'm sure you have seen worse!

only 19 metres !!

only 19 metres?
only joking we used to get 6 and swing onto the boat landing dock in angola, you do have boat landing docks in the north sea? and transfer off work boats by swinging on ropes?

talk about abandoning rigs, we had a petrobas one and they took a kick, by the time the company man had his wits about him and told them to close the preventers the porks and brazileros were about half a mile away in the life boats !!!

We've got a photo from the air of a North Sea platform in the office with a serious wave breaking around it, everytime I walk past I wonder how I'd fare in Glen Rosa in that! Think I'd like the hatchboards in ... and my insurance premiums paid ..

Re: only 19 metres !!

No, They've stopped the old rope trick here, they don't use crew boats, but they still use personnel baskets, which are real fun with a sea running! Not often now thank God!

Re: only 19 metres !!

I remember once in Aberdeen Airport, the girl at the information desk was confused that every time she made the call "Will Billy Pugh please contact Airport Information" every North Sea Tiger in the place roared with laughter.

She was none too pleased when she discovered that a Billy Pugh was the transfer basket used offshore. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: only 19 metres !!

All you north sea tigers are making me feel quite ill. Here off Sicily we have had light airs and ripples for about 10 days now. It can get a wee bit rough, mainly on crew change day in the bar, and the forecast is for WNW 5 at the moment.
We will have to think about abandoning in that!!!!
All the best to the rest of the oil field trash who have to work at this time of year to bring in an honest crust. Hope the sea conditions subside so that our wine is not spilt.

You bast..d you really know how to upset a man! I'll remember this when I get home! I'll put some big hungry rust bugs on yer' boat!! By the way, I won't now be standing in, in norway, so will be in barca from the 27th dec, till 10th jan!

it took a while for the penny to drop !

we used to read books, smoke billions of ciggies, drink loads of cawfee and you guys have an open line to the net !!!
there was silly old me thinking that only old retired oil field trash or ex master mariners had the time and inclination to keep a constant watch on a forum like this !!
how times change !!

Only here, we don't have much in the way of anything in Libya, Gabon, Nigeria, Algeria, Saudi, etc. etc. etc. Times haven't changed that much, believe me!

Re: it took a while for the penny to drop !

We should be back the night of the 8th Jan looking for some fresh veggies. Guess what the cook remembered all the bu****it stuff like the smoked salmon, crawfish, prawns etc etc but forgot the bl**dy fresh veggies. Only an Aussie could do that!!!!!!!!!!!
Good day though with a fresh breeze and about 19 deg max.
See you soon,
Mike
