It's enough to make you turn the VHF off! Went for a wee sail doon the watter (Clyde) today and the radio seemed to be a continuous stream of english voices asking the CG for radio checks. What with them and the CG lassie "rodgering" nearly every message, the thing hardly stopped bleating all afternoon.

Something about ladies in uniform....... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif PS would Scottish folk asking for radio checks be easier on the ear??

Probably due to English holidaymakers checking out their VHF as they start their cruise in the charter boat or trailer-sailer that they've just taken out.
The Scots in the area don't have to do radio checks because their boats are generally in fairly constant use.

[/ QUOTE ]'Tis the english disease speading north /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif As for the wee CG lassie, she was probably pissed off with all the calls for a radio check.

I'm not too sure where you would get an opportunity to insert "roger" into an RC message if you were operating at an MRCC.

You would receive a call along the lines of:-

"coastguard, coastguard, coastguard - this is mucky-duck, mucky-duck, radio check over"

To which the only possible correct response is

"mucky-duck this is coastguard, loud and clear over"

Even if mucky-duck has no knowledge of RT whatsoever (which seems likely from the above posts), I cant see that any reply along the lines of "thanks" would warrant a "rogering" from the MRCC.

I too was boating around the clyde on Sunday. Lovey day for a sail. And confirm that the helpful people on Clyde Coastguard were as usual causing the occasional wince to radio pedants - but perfectly understandable.

On a visit to the Olympics, Chick Murray saw a guy carrying a pole. He asked him, "Are you a pole vaulter". The guy replied, "No, I'm German, but how did you know my name is Walter?"
