An elderly friend of mine aspires to being a cowboy. He wants to know if you can ride a Highland Moo. THis is a serious post so no bum steers expected!

Re: Nomenclature problem

no problem riding the Highland Moo, but possible problem with the nomenclature.

You see, cowboys don't actually RIDE the cows- they roundem up, whilst riding a horse. In the same way, a shepherd actually uses a dog, not a sheep to carry out their tasks, actually named after the object of their tasks, not the animals used to carry them out. Now, if he's riding a cow, he can't be rounding up cattle, and in fact really be rounding up anything. So, rather than being a cowboy, he'd actually be a nothingboy or zeroboy.

The second problem is the "boy" aspect and i note that you say your friend is v elderley. So he can hardly be a cowboy or even a cowman, so possibly cowgit is more appropriate

Taking both these into account means that your friend would be a Zerogit, which at least avoid the negative connotations of being a Cowboy.

Seeing that the Black Watch rode sheep he should have no problem. However this is a Scottish habit - is he a Scot?

Re: Nomenclature problem

Haven't you seen the car ad (beemer I think) with the cowboy doing dressage (full half pass to be exact) on a bull?

Now there's a challenge for Jimi's young friend

Strangely enough, nephew (aged 10), rides bulls at rodeos in the US, and last time we were over, we watched him practicing. Our own boy even had a go.(That was funny). Anyway, one of the bulls they were using was a young Heilan Coo steer.

walking through the woods the other day, Little Red Riding Hood saw a little man bent double sitting on a toadstool holding his heid in his hands, full of concern for the little chap she asked "Elf, have you a sair heid?"
The little chap shouts "Go away can't you see I'm a goblin!"
