I spoke with an official Mercury mechanic today. He recently attended a course to learn how to deal with the computerised configuration of Axius pods. And he was strongly recommended to use a notebook with a serial port (!), because the RS-232 connector can be screwed to the PC, whilst the USB connector is just plugged in.
Why? Because in some occasions they experienced accidental disconnections of the USB interface while configuring the ECM. With the result that it had to be replaced, after hanging completely!
