On 4th July, 4 volunteers from sailing charity "able2sail" will depart Kip for Rockall in order to raise funds for able2sail. That charity offers free sailing opportunities for those with disabilities, and takes all manner of folk out for a day's sail on the Clyde. Two men, and two women, sailing 1000 miles in 10 days in a Rival 32.

Rockall is about 230 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. (North Uist nearest). In company with two other Rivals, this will be the 50th anniversary of the launching of the first Rival.

You can follow the adventure on yellowbrick tracker (access through able2sail website).

If you enjoy sailing, please spare a few pounds for those that don't have much opportunity to do so. Help maintain and operate the modified Bavaria 46 that facilitates the charity offering sailing to the disabled. Donation page is on the website.

On a recent outing earlier this year, the accompanying carer to a severely autistic young lad said... "That's the first time I've ever seen him smile".

Please help us make many like him smile this year. Just like you do when you're out on your boat.

Have a great trip and I look forward to hearing about it on your return.

I hope you don't mind, but I give to another sailing charity for people less fortunate than most of us.

if you pay by credit card rather than paypal it Virgin don't need to keep your card/papyal details

You can also just go into your PayPal settings after making the payment and delete the link to Virgin Money Giving as well. You shouldn't have to, but you can. It almost put me off donating, so I think another less intrusive means of giving would be a bonus.

ack to the OP - please take lots of pics. i will be following you on the tracker - cheers

good luck landing - you are trying aren't you? ;-)

Comments about the difficulty of using the Virgin page taken on board. We've set up a Just giving page in parallel, and that can be linked here...

Yes, we'll taken plenty of pictures, and the yellowbrick tracker will be activated when we leave Kip Marina, aiming to be 1800 BST on Wednesday 4th July. We'll stop at Castlebay to join 2 other Rivals, then off Saturday 7th westbound.

Think we'll have to take a little more diesel, as the forecast doesn't have a lot of wind in it! Excessive sun for Scotland, and unusual lack of wind!

Looking at the Yellow Brick tracking objective reached yesterday and they are taking the scenic route back via St Kilda. Really, really lucky with the weather. Not that we are insanely jealous or anything like that.

We're back!
Rockall is certainly not a tourist attraction. As one crew said "There's Rockall to see!". Took us 48 hours and 13 minutes from Castlebay, started out good, but ended with fully reefed main and part foresail on both boats. 2 Rivals in company. We started with three, but lost contact with Samsara, who was going on to the Azores after rounding Rockall (singlehanded). It was a close beat all the way out.
Wave height was 2-3m and considered too rough to attempt a landing by the three climbers between 2 boats, so we agreed to see something far more scenic and set sail to St Kilda, and the namesake of the other boat Hirta, Several crew between boats had not been there before.
There will be more pix and videos on Facebook, but I'll put some here too.
Our fundraising was disappointing, with about 2% of those "liking", "sharing" and otherwise engaging via social media actually donating. (And its a sailing charity after all)
The trip back was far better, almost down wind, though we could not be bothered flying either of our spinnakers, preferring to get some sleep.IMG_4886s.jpgIMG_4883s.jpgIMG_4880s.jpg

Well done ☺ its a long way... I'm not that convinced by FB either for raising money - but you did raise the profile of the charity, which is never a bad thing. Good on you

Thanks for posting that Geoff. I look forward to seeing the stuff on Facebook.

Interestingly, we ask a lot of people at out Institute of Engineering and Technology talks how they found out about them and nobody says social media. On other talks that I attend I've asked the speaker if they will also ask the same question, same result .

I've also left a few Facebook groups because everybody is trying to sell something; that is not why I use it.

Well done on an epic voyage.

You can track our voyage on Yellowbrick, here.. http://yb.tl/able2sail_2018
It's possible to replay the journey at variable speed.

and if you desperately want to donate, but didn't manage yet, here's two links of ways you could..

We all love sailing. But its also nice to give a little of pleasure to others with disabilities. That's what able2sail does. £10 buys a couple of shackles. Can you spare a sheckle or two? (pun)
