Found a fault, from the rudder feed back, the cable had been extended, before my time, and the joint was adrift, did the repair but the test following it was strange we now hold a course but not very accurately (weaving) have tried all the variations on the control panel but of no avail, all other connections are sound, it looks like we may have to bite the bullet and renew the electronics, I take it the pump and ram will be ok.

Check for magnetic items around the compass location, i.e. within 1 metre - gas bottles, speakers, compass, tools, tincans, engines, fire extinguishers etc.

Is the weaving under or over steer?

If still no go, then pump and ram are likely to be reusable.

Thought it might be a wiring problem!
I think what you might have now is the unit has lost calibration and needs to be put through its setup routine again. If you still have the original instruction manual it will tell you how to do this. If not I have a 4000 series which might be similar. If it is working but over compensating, it sounds as if its working OK but needs tuning.

Got the Manual, and will try to reset, to be honest I doubt if it has been working properly for ages, but we will see. The boat runs true without auto, or much helming when cruising at 15 knots.

On mine there are three distinct programmes. sailboat, displacement power, and planing. If you have it on the wrong setting it won't work properly. There is also a proceedure for setting the compass that involves slowly sailing in a circle. That sometimes helps to repeat if the compass has lost calibration. There should be a way of tuning it for seastate manually too rather than have it on auto-learn where it should figure it out for itself. Persevere!!
