Road diesel near a marina

We are planning a trip to the East Coast (Crouch to Southwold area) next month, after an absence of ten years. I really don't want to open a can of worms, but I have a Belgian registred boat, with all it entails. We always used road diesel since having had trouble with dirty marina diesel, and a run-in about red diesel in Holland.
Now, the question is, can somebody point out which marina's are near enough to a service station I can take the trolley to? Many service stations have disappeared to outlying supermarkets. Google maps help, but often do not list the private-owned ones. I'm aware of the one near Fox's on the Orwell. Are there restrictions on filling a canister in a forecourt?
Much opbliged for any help.

There's another little garage in Orford, just beyond the Kings Head.
Garages don't seem to care much what you put diesel in, petrol they get uptight about.

Upsons and Wilsons boat yards both sell diesel at Slaughden, Aldeburgh but I am not sure what colour, maybe you can call them.
There is no garage in Aldebugh and none in Southwold. There was one in Waldringfield a few monhs ago, but otherwise I cant think of another close to the Deben.
I recently enquired on the law at a local garage and they old me 10 litre containers where the max permitted, but it seems a grey area.

We have red and White diesel from the new fuel station at Southwold.
It's just past the lifeboat station on your right as you head in.
Operated by the Harbour Master so give him a shout on ch12

Erbas of this forum is a service station manager and will know the answer (he is currently causing this rain by being on his boat).

All too true

It's a thorny and complex topic and I'm on the mobile so to keep it brief you SHOULD be OK with

2 x 5l plastic OR 2 x 10l metal OR 1 x 22l metal UN or EN approved containers stamped / marked by the manufacturers with the appropriate markings

You MAY get away with more and / or other types of containers depending on a> the terms of the specific site licence, b> the instructions issued by the operator to their staff and c> the vigilance of the staff

Unmanned sites (pay at pump) are particularly lax. The same rules apply but are poorly enforced.

Please don't slag off forecourt staff for doing their job. They don't make the rules up and the consequences of failing a test purchase by trading standards start with a disciplinary and a warning the first time and get worse from there. Managers are, of course, expected to set an example.

Independent operators are potentially likely to be less rigid in applying the rules than the big chains (but I didn't say that) and experienced knowledgeable staff may apply a bit of discretion although they aren't supposed to (and I definitely didn't say that!)

Thanks to everyone who contributed, most helpful!

Dear Erbas, I've got proper approved 10 liter canisters. And a spare 20 liter one. I'm forever topping up my 50 liter tank on board - I don't like motoring with less than half full. It was never the idea to slag off the staff. On the continent, they have become a rarefied breed, unfortunately.

FYI: beware of any Belgian flagged saily boats, it could be me...

Thalassa - you should be alright with a 10l metal but if it's plastic (I myself have a fully type approved EN compliant with 10l plastic diesel can and 20l cans are legally sold) the forecourt staff may refuse to authorise the pump

Yes, it's utterly stupid but that's just the way it is

The slagging off comment was aimed at someone else by the way :)

In the Harvest on the Bourne bridge today stock car racers filled 2 x 10 ltr petrol in plastic cans & put the full cans in the stock car on the trailer
I have 2 x 20 ltr plastic containers marked with "Gas Oil" labels

Funnily enough, that's exactly the situation of my last refusal to serve just before escaping the coal face for two weeks of fun in the sun

Stupid company rules designed for simplicity rather than applying the actual terms of the licence and a senior manager on site at the time (on the night shift I'll usually turn a blind eye as long as the containers are legal cos the size and quantity rules are dumb)

Didn't that site used to be a Shell and is now an independent? Might be the difference

A couple of years ago three of us were done over by the French Douanes in one of their remote colonial outposts. The lead Douane who had a rather unfortunate twitch we decided to call Monsieur Flick. He was able assisted by a rather stately blond that we called Helga and whose job it was to keep us distracted in the cockpit with the same funny story repeated in English ad infinitum while the search was carried out below. The only member of the trio whose real name we picked up was Benoir or Benoit who assisted M Flick with the search and whom M. Flick castigated in French that was too fast for me to understand. M. Benoir was so obese that while he managed to get down the companionway he was unable to fit through any of the cabin doors, so stood in the saloon and handed M. Flick his wrecking tools. As one of the crew observed 'M. Benoir is the perfect example why fat men in uniforms should not wear shorts'. They said they were looking for weapons and were not amused when I showed them my boomerang. Fortunately they didn't find any not even when the brought a dog on board and had me open all the 'secret compartments' they had identified. President Sarkozy was in town at that time and we thought perhaps that they felt thatone of us was the new 'Jackal' with a job to do.
Your mention of Frau Hitler immediately brought this officious trio to mind.

I can't identify "Frau Hitler" I use that garage quite after as it is our nearest. I remember there was a pleasant Polish girl who was always polite and had a nice smile and she certainly was still there after Shell gave up, but I have not seen her recently. I find it hard to believe that she and Frau Hitler are one and the same?
