How can you make a DSC call to an MMSI No. on the AIS list?

Here it is from the horses mouth:

Dear Sir

Thank you for your inquiry

You cannot do this directly. You have to note the number and return to the
DSC menu to initiat the call

Remain at your disposal for any further details

Best regards

So, a surprising lack of functionality that had I known it, would have persuaded me to buy from another manufacturer

Seems somewhat typical for marine electronics, sadly. I swear nobody who designs this stuff has ever been on board a yacht.

I know I say this a lot, and I don't want to sound like an unpaid product rep, but this is why I'm so fond of my Vesper AIS display. The guy who designed it is a sailor - Vesper is the name of his boat - and so it works the way I actually want to use it at sea. The AIS functions in Kindred Spirit's old plotter, on the other hand, were terrible, as if some generic software developer had been given a list of the available data in an AIS message and asked to display it - and I'm sure that's exactly what happened. Everything was there, but the way it hung together just wasn't usable.

Unbelievable - like a car that you have to stop and open the bonnet to select reverse gear.

I have one, does the biz except for that glaring cockup! I bet if Angus Mc could get in to it he could make it talk!
on another tack, have found out from a frog site that holding in 16 and watch while switching on gives a gateway in to programming MMSI BUT the 6500 for the code apparantly doesnt work. Will fiddle later to test it.

It's also easier to enter MMSIs vis the wired command mic keypad which has a button for each number and is layed out like a phone; no turning and pressing knobs.

The RO4500 uses the same method to clear the MMSI but the number to enter is 4500 or 1688. Could be worth trying those and 4800.

Speaking as an embedded software writer; very few customers provide detailed specifications. In fact a surprising number don't see the need for anything other than a few notes in an email and are surprised when......... (oh hell I'm ranting).
