Yes; the RNLI and Oxfam were certainly the two richest charitable institutions in Great Britain a few years back. It is unlikely to have changed.

Yes they must be wealthy, they save on stamp as well, please note before reading this, I have no gripes with them whatsoever, but 2 years ago my Father died, we sent all his funeral collection, and it was over 500 quid to them.

Weeks went by, never heard a thing, rang them up at Poole hq, to see if they had recieved the money and they said yes, but no letter of thanks until a request by my sisters letter to them as my Mother by now was getting quite upset.

Anyway gripe over enough said. I make a yearly contribution by DDebit.

it's cold; it's wet; you're tired; you're hungry; you're nearly home and you're coming in through the Needles Channel- the wind picks up to gale force and you hit the shallows and keel rips off and you start to sink - the wife and kids, the most precious things in the world, are asleep down below.

I know when you give you should receive thanks but in this sort of scenario they'll come out no questions asked and on more than a few occasions they've died trying. I'm glad they're well funded, let it continue to be so. I'm sure your father would rest more peacefully if the situation DIDN'T occur that you drowned as they didn't have the means to come and get you.

I send money to the RNLI - I don't expect thanks - it would take someone to be employed to write the letter thus diluting the money's real cause.

... not a dig at you Paul - just airing my opinions for those who expect to go to sea knowing nothing but being able to operate a GPS an expect to get rescued if all goes tits up.

Re: RNLI funding

Hang on a minute. They may have "wealth" in their accounts of 1/4 or 1/2bn "in the kitty" but that's just the value of the lifeboats and other equipmnet, it's not spare cash. In which case no problem.

On a different point, I'm still a bit concerned about what Byron said some months back. Apparently they get paid a fee by HMCG each time they launch, in which case they're funded by taxpayer, and I can't help feeling that makes their claim "funded entirely by voluntary donations" misleading, frankly. If I have the facts wrong please fell free to correct me

Re: RNLI funding

As far as I'm aware the lifeboat service is funded by donation alone. With the exption of the Humber station where the crew lives on station. All the men are unpaid with the exception of a minimal boot allowance paid for attendance. They don't even get their petrol money. The boats engineer is paid as he has to make regular maintenance trips to the boats to keep them in service. The Hon. Sec. may claim expences but in most cases this is waived by the individual.
My wife is the stock sec. for the local collecting branch, I'll get her to check with the Branch Chairperson as soon as possible.

We've stood on the breakwater at Ramsgate as I'm sure Byron has when the lifeboat is out and 9/10 times I've thought that all the money in the world is not worth the courage that it must take to go out in all weathers risking your neck saving anothers skin. All they ever get is the thanks of the institution on a bit of parchment.

Where ever the money comes from they deserve the best equipment that money can buy and the support of every breathing soul in our Island race. Unlike the AA or the RAC they will never turn you down.

End of sermon now shut up and get on with the newbie bashing and the race to see who can get the most entries in the sin bin.

Most sensible comment was made by someone i know who has been on the water for 60 odd years.
Q.What is the best way to help the RNLI
A.Try not to be responsible for them having to come and rescue you.

Great reply Roger, I suppose a job is saved by not replying but, at that time in our lives which incidently is on the 25th of this month, yes the 25th, think about it then the aftermath of 2 years ago for our family was quite enough, then not to get a reply from my Fathers favourite and probably only charity he ever gave to was a little bit sore. Anyway happy sailing to you.

Re: RNLI funding

No not at all Byron. I note your utmost respect for crews and I share it, and I know (as ChrisP says elsewhere here) they're volunteers.

I was raising just one point, which is that I would like to know if they're funded entirely by donations or not, because it was said the taxpayer (in effect) pays each time they launch. If that happens, then fine, but the funding should be transaparent that's all, and I would just like to know the answer.

Best wishes

Re: charity funding

The boxes for donations are, as I understand, only a part of the jangling money-collectiing operation.

I visited one large National summink society and quite frighteneing marketing department had mailshot details of old people,, very old people, magazines erad by old people, ....and of uk solicitors for making their case to poor ole ladies whose hubbie liked boats, so her son get all the 20k cash, and the RNLI get the rest, then the y carry on for 20 years during which monster house inflation, charity gets the 600grand house and nice fat bonus for the mktg dept.
