This story is making my blood boil https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-46679414

And I bet they're going to lose a lot of public support because of it. These illegal immigrants are already in a country of safe refuge, then they put to sea without so much as a lifejacket, and the RNLI selflessly leave their Christmas dinners, and their families, to risk their own lives :disgust:

...and I'll bet they won't, it's better publicity than "a free towing service for the mechanically challenged middle classes".

Merry Christmas.

The trouble is that towing them in will encourage further illegal immigration, and the RNLI won't get to all of them, some will drown.
So bringing them back to the UK on a lifeboat is very dubious on wider ethical grounds.
It rewards suicidal voyages from what is already a safe country for "refugees": France.
Politicians need to get a grip on this incipient tsunami. A fat chance!

Don't you know, these "mechanically challenged middle classes" are who keep the RNLI afloat. And generally they don't want the country overrun with third world immigrants. Especially, the kind of "refugee" who's already made it to safe refuge, but prefers the benefits system Britain provides.

Those three spirits didn't do much for you last night then, I take it? Oh well, there is always next year.

To have to be so desperate to give up everything in the hopes of a better life, my heart goes out to them. I'll welcome them here to our shores any day of the week. And I'll drink the health of the brave girls and boys of the RNLI too, and an extra £100 to them to, I think.

Comfy armchair is it old chap?

That's so sad. These people are economic migrants, simply wanting to get their hands on the benefits which UK taxpayers so freely hand out. They weren't in danger before, they were in France - a (fairly) civilised country. They're generally dressed well, in "designer" clothes. They have smartphones, and credit to make calls. They don't deserve our sympathy; they deserve to be put on the first ferry back to France.

Yes; and they are, by definition, criminals: deliberate illegal immigrants who were already in France, officially a safe country.
The UK may be short of certain professions, but 'lying, scavenging criminal' isn't on that list..

The RNLI , or perhaps HMCG, will certainly at some point be put in the awkward position of being obliged either to aid and abet this illegal influx with their limited resources, or rescue some members of their more traditional, mariners-in-distress "customers" (and I've been one).
Here's your hypothetical choice: an inflatable one mile off Gris Nez, full of freeloaders, googling 'UK benefits' on their iPhones?
OR a sinking ship, a terrified kid blown out to sea on an airbed, a dismasted yacht going onto the Sandettie in a rising SW gale?

..... and if there's a pregnant woman amongst them then, no doubt, a stable would be too good for her. If they only knew how small minded and xenophobic the existing immigrants - Norse, Angles, Picts, Danes, French, Asians, Africans, etc. - are, then they might save themselves the bother.
Merry Xmas !

Lots of great Christmas spirit on this thread. Lots of assumptions and lots of bigotry. I am not a Christian but folks really should ask "what would Jesus do?" at this time of year.

So I gather you're happy to see your taxes increased to pay for a never-ending influx of largely-unemployable people?

Ah, play the "christmas spirit" card! It doesn't matter what time of year it is, there are basic principles of right and wrong; you seem to favour the wrong ones.

Well, if you believe the hype, he'd probably wander across the water and give them a piggy back. :D

so what is the alternative, let them drown?

No, but if they're "rescued" they should be put on the first ferry back to France, not given free entry to the taxpayer-funded benefits haven of the UK.
The question was for the OP that seemed most concerned about the RNLI crew.
Would assume that they are handed over to the authorities..
