I was fortunate enough to be offered the chance of a guided tour of the RNLI training centre last week down at Poole Quay and a few minutes in the simulator.

I am very impressed with the whole set up and the apparent professionalism of the organisation. Considering it a charity its quite in a league of its own (they dont have shabby shops selling secondhand clothes a la help the aged).

It costs a 100m quid a year to run the RNLI and as always it needs our support so I've becom a member and reckon any boat owner should be.

Here endeth the lesson.

Apparently, they are the richest charity in the UK in terms of assets so dont feel too sorry for them and, yes, I do donate to them

Yes I do subscribe and have done so for since 1994. However, I did hear a rumour that the RNLI built this training station as they had a lot of money in reserve and were in danger of losing their charitable status. As I said it could be a rumour I dont know how true a statement like that could be.

Very nice accomodation as well. I stayed there Saturday night and again last weekend. Shame though they have increased B/B prcie from £30/per night to £45!! Don't mind an increase but 50% over night (excuse the pun) is a bit steep. They have 60 rooms and only 7 were occupied on Sat night. Won't be staying there again as it is now not economic in terms of my drive back from Poole. Shame really! Empty rooms = lost revenue! Oh well, may be there catch up on marketing sooner or later.

YES double yes.

I forget how much it costs, but 'Shoreline' is great to get you home if you stay coastal.

If you are venturing across the English Channel it might be worth getting 'Off-shore' in case they need to send the helicopter to get the engine going or something.

No limit on the number of call-outs per year either. If they can't fix the problem they tow you home, or to the nearest main dealer. Doesn't come with free loan boat or overnight hotel accomadation like the BMW Emergency Assist though (actually, neither does BMW, it comes with a free loan CAR if the dealer can't get you going again).

Perhaps they should look at incorporating something like that into the RNLI package.
