got to mount 2 new cleats on my mast so 4 6.5mm monel rivets. Seems silly to buy a rivet gun for just 4 rivets - anyone in the bristol / cardiff area who has one and is willing to loan it out for a day? Hire it out?

I would try to hire one, although that may be easier to say than to do.

I would rather use a long handled type than lazy tongs for that size of Monel rivet.

I bought a cheap lazy tongs from Toolstation ... cheaper and easier than hiring ....... it was fine for the sizes of rivel I wanted it for but I would not think it up to setting 6.5mm Monel rivets

i have this one

apparently does 6.4mm. might be worth buying it rather than travelling to Cardiff twice though, unless your planning a sail down this way soon

What make is that one from Screwfix - the Draper and Silverline are not much of it - but I have seen much better units for about £60 (Bell Tools )

The toolstation unit is Silverline ( not promising ! ) Its usually the jaws that go.
The better brands have spare jaw available -

see here for proper quality - and not overpriced -

My Toolstation one is a Rolson tools one.... maybe worse that a Silverline one? but for under £20 it did what I needed to do and was less than a couple of days hire.

I know Id not attempt to set 6.4mm Monel rivets with it though!

I do 4.8 with small handheld cheapo - but I heat the rivet in a blowlamp a bit just before setting. They pull up easy then !

One day I will buy a decent one - but have a long 'one day' list :(
