RIVERLIFE My Favourite Moorings

We have stayed in a few nice places on The Thames this week. Our own mooring on Church Island is nice enough. We stopped at Teddington Lock and that was great - very quiet and lots to do within a short walk. Then Imperial Wharf, which is very friendly and exciting too - i failed to get a photo with a boat, train, helicopter and airplane in the same take but it was possible. Then Limehouse with the best riverside pubs I have been to. Now I am back at Richmond Yacht Club's mooring at Eel Pie, chilling in peace after watching two games of rugby. :)

Anchored at Trent Falls waiting for the tide to turn, for our southern friends not really a "fall", just where the Trent, Humber and Ouse meet.Idyllic on a nice day,all you can hear are the birds and the lapping of the water going past the hull.Sorry no picture but imagine perfect solitude with a view of "Burton Hills and the village of Alkboro and its church about a mile away.

I've very fond memories of a mooring we used frequently a few years ago. Its just upstream of Medmenham Abbey opposite Magpie Island on the Thames. From here, we were only half an hour away from our base at Harleyford. Althought we were only a stones throw from Henley, we felt we were in the middle of nowhere. We always found it a peaceful spot until the downstream lock keeper was just about to go home and there would be a last minute rush of boats passing us. Most of our entertaining was done here with family and friends and we've even spent our twenty something wedding anniversary here with champagne and smoked salmon!

We would often come back early from a few days further upriver just to spend time at this spot. My three children spent more time in the water than on it and have all grown up to be good swimmers. For some reason, it was here, more than anywhere else, that they played like children should and were able to forget about the pressures of teenage life and all that goes with it. For that reason alone, this becomes my favourite mooring.
