Hi,

I don't know if you've noticed our Favourite Mooring section in MBM's Riverlife pages.

Essentially it's your chance to nominate your favourite spot to moor up along a river or inland waterway. All we need is a photo of the spot and a few words from you about why you love it so much!

It would be great to hear any suggestions from you lot. So if you want to post in this thread or drop me a line at matt_thomas@ipcmedia.com, we're waiting to hear from you.

Cheers,

Matt

couple of my favourites are:

Clifton Hampden - although only ever get to there about once a year on our holiday cruise. Always very quiet but such a scenic view of the bridge, and the village is very picture postcard because of all the thatched houses.

other favourite would be cookham, as we do this one most weekends as only about 2 hours cruising from our marina in Bray. Always lots of other boats, great choice of pubs and restaurants if you want to eat out, or also a great place to have a bbq.

Arney River, Upper Lough Erne

ours must be the entrance into the Arney River on Upper Lough Erne ( Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland )

The Arney River is only navigable for just over a third of a mile, it is the only bank mooring on Lough Erne that does not have passing boats and is just magic.

We have so many moorings that we like but the moorings opposite Newark Castle on the River Trent have to be one of our favourites. All the facilities of a large town located close at hand, the park next door and the fabulous castle to admire.

Looks very good CX. Any problem with Scallies when mooring in town?

We are reluctant to moor overnight in Worcester for this reason.

We have yet to have any trouble with "scallies" anywhere we have moored. We have moored in quite a lot of town/city centres. York (Kings Staithe), Ripon, Selby, Lincoln, Nottingham, Boston, Loughborough, im sure there are more but right now they elude me.

We have heard many a horror story about places we have moored, we just ignore them and make our own judgement about each place we visit. You do of course have to be careful, for example when we are moored on a bigger rivers in towns we use all four ropes and ensure they are tied back onto the boat and where possible on rings. Wont stop someone cutting the ropes of course but if they have four to go at they may just walk past.

I agree. We have moored in all the places you mention apart from Selby and Ripon and have never had any trouble (touch wood..).
The only place I wouldn't moor overnight is Gainsborough, where there's many a tale of scallies throwing stuff (like bottles) over the wall at boats below. Not that Gainsborough is worth stopping in anyway:eek:

We have spent the evening at Gainsborough on the pontoon with not trouble at all. We were genuinely surprised by the town. There is a lot of regeneration work ongoing in the town and it can only get better. We had a few questions asked by kids but other than that had a quiet evening.

king's marina @newark is nice and freindly..good clean showers and such...
only 8quid for an overnight stay including elecky aswell..

We prefer not to be marina dwellers when we are on the boat. We have everything we need onboard so why pay to spend the night in another marina? The reason we went out on the boat was to get away from our marina :)

Of course there are exceptions. Hull or Grimsby for example. You have little choice other than anchoring on the Humber for the night or on the coast. Pulling into a different port town is great and you expect to pay for the pleasure, but on the river when you ahve paid a fee to use your local moorings I dont see the point in using another marina.

One of our favourite spots on the Fossdyke. You need your mooring pins for this one. Not telling where it is either, its our spot :D

just pointing out that their is a nice secure mooring available. if someone is worried about the local idiot's.

We have had some lovely evenings moored at Cromwell as well. And stoke lock and Hazelford Lock they just are not on our favourites list. Nun Munkton and Linton Lock on the Ouse are high up there though.

Lincolnshire is fairly flat, you can see the powerstations for miles. That doesnt narrow the search down too much :D

My guess is somewhere between Torksey and Saxilby. Given that you can still see West Burton pwr stn in the background.
Maybe just along a bit from Torksey?
