Saw it today and as it happends, I've got the chart here at home. From where it looks to have come from. Theres only two, or three metres on the chart, for about four miles out. Theres a bit of a chanel with about six metres, from the south, but that leave a good mile or two with less than two metres. Cant understand how it's got there, it's vertually on the beach.

DOH! You beat me to it, I was going to say "in a series of short, loud crunches"
Have you ever been in such a position? I went aground on a lee shore once. Waves were all of 6-8" but the crunches as she bounced were AWFUL, the worst 20 mins of my life as I first failed to get her off & then desperately tried to to get her harder on to stop the awful thumps. Died a thousand deaths waiting for the tide to return, but wind had veered & she pulled off in about 10 mins. No damage, except to my pride!
Nearly, when entering Wexford, I missed the channel and crossed a sand bank in an E F5-6. The depth was changing from 6ft to 1ft under the keels. I should not have gone for it, but once committed I had to semi-surf over the top of the bank. Every trough was heart stopping, luckily the troughs started to slowly get deeper and we were in the channel and on our way in.
It was near brown trousers time, had we hit the putty I have no doubt we would have lost the boat. Someone was looking after me that day, I was forgiven for a stupid and dangerous decision.
