Hi folks,

We arrived back in the River Orwell on Saturday 11/08/07 at around 0330 hrs.Proceding up the river noticed a large amount of weed ,foam and a slightly nasty pong.We have not seen this before and wondered if there is an explanation.

It's probably due to the balmy summer we've been enjoying causing so much weed growth. Actually these things are quite variable; in one west-country bay we visited I thought the excess weed had been caused by fertiliser run-off as it used to be clear when I went as a child back in the last century.
Also, it can happen that gunk deposited at high water stays for a few weeks if it happens at springs. Now I wonder if anyone has shown that the Orwell is smellier at neap tides?

Yes, it is hard not to notice it.

I can't have sundowners in the cockpit when on the mooring at LW as all mud flats bubble and fizz with foam and pong. The long weed stuff has attached itself to my antifouling and I growing a beard. Now restorted to Pot-Pouri in the cabin!
