River jollies at PH

I had the pleasure of meeting Tony in Staines today, though he did object to my dirty starboard side and commented that it was the first time he'd seen Shikara afloat when Legacy was tied up.

Then had the later pleasure of meeting him at PH. The stream and wind were very strong (I'd noted that the river had dropped by a foot overnight and the flow out of the weir down the marina approach was dramatic) and I struggled to hold station while waiting for the lock to open, so chose to do short "up and downs" or whatever you should call them.

Legacy arrived and was immediately affected by the same issues... but more so as I'm only 24 foot and on one level. It was rather amusing to watch Tony try to keep place and I fully understood what he was dealing with.

Meanwhile, the nemesis arrives: A (hush...) NB. The lock opens and Legacy and Shikara gently enter, followed by the said NB who immediately opened a sarcastic "what were you guys doing... blah blah". Tony was superb in explaining the troubles we were having and I was very impressed that it was his West Highland White that broke first: Please picture a Westie deciding the have a go at an NB.

There followed some great banter in PH and the lockie joined in. I let the NB go ahead of me and they clearly decided that meant they could go ahead of Legacy as well. I thought Tony was very calm /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A great hour of boating and a fond memory to keep. Great fun. Cheers to Tony:

I forgot to mention that another fabled forumite wasn't in:

And just when I fancied a coffee too!

Then we went and played with an electric boat

Seeing your Seafarer Echo Sounder through the window brings back fond memories. In the early 70s I would buy 6 of those at £30 each and take them to Cherbourg with me where I would sell them to a Chandler for £45 each. This paid for my week-end including fuel. Fuel then was about 2 bob a gallon (10p). Seafarers in France were £90 I think.

The strong stream really was a pig at PH and the wind certainly didnt help.
The guy in front of me could have moored up a lot closer to the lock which would have helped.

I was not aware that you had told NB matey he could move out ahead of you but I thought his behaviour was totally unacceptable - he passed the guy in front of me as well and then did a hard right across in front of him to go round into PH.
Was it just me or did you also get the impression that both the NBs thought it was great fun to havve a tilt at us?

I thought the lady was having a pop and the other NB halfheartedly joined in. I thought we dealt with them with good banter and she seemed to get a little less acidic. I had a chat with the chap on the tiller (lady's husband) who was quite relaxed about it all and agreed the stream was strong. I let him by us as he was already under way... but was really surprised when he made a beeline for the gates, I've not seen someone be cut up in a lock before!

It doesn't work though - an antique, I am told /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

OK! assuming your connection to the Transducer is OK try opening the back, disconnecting the main feed and inserting a PP9 battery instead. You may find it springs into life, there wasn't a lot to go wrong with those which is why they sold in the millions in their day. Funnily enough problems with the Seafarers were often cured by using a PP9 instead of a main feed from the boat battery.
