River Crouch

I'm going to be cruising out of North Fambridge next week, so along the river Crouch and the surrounding area, I don't really know too much about the place, so does anyone have any tips on where to stay/visit, are there any nice marina's, restaurants, pubs worth going to?

The Ferry Boat pub at North Fambridge is worth a visit - it's the only pub and the only place that serves food. It's a good walk from the marina but not far from the pontoon on the river that is also run by North Fambridge Yacht Station. A very peaceful location. The facilities for the pontoon and the marina are excellent.

Up river it dries out but you could time a visit to Brandy Hole YC and their restaurant.

The only other proper marina is at Burnham - an interesting town with good pubs. There is a restaurant in the marina.

Essex Marina on the south bank is just pontoons with a good current ripping through them. Google it.

Down the Roach there are good anchoring locations and moorings at Paglesham where a dinghy ride and a short walk get you to the Plough and Sail - very nice.

If you want to go a bit futher then a trip across the Raysand to Brightlingsea would be a good overnighter. See here for a download of the depths over the Raysand.

Bit of advance warning, the pontoon at Brandy Hole (that is nothing to do with the YC) will probably be closed to visitors from next year. I was chatting with the yard manager today and he said he hasn't been able to come to an equitable agreement with the YC.

If you stay at Burnham Marina, the restaurant and bar there is fine. but you will get a bigger choice of eating out if you walk into town. Spice Fusion is the Indian at the top of the town (find the Co-op by walking from the marina along the road - not the side of the river and walk onto the main road and turn right and its on the opposite side near the chippie)

Walk along the river into town and the Ship is a good place to eat. Or try the Tapas Bar - Rio's - which is great.

Or just walk in to town by the Coop and then walk down the main road - that will take you past everything in Burnham including the cinema and when you get to the Victoria at the end you've seen everything and can make your choice.

Go down to the Roach, folow the Roach round to Yokesfleet Creek and anchor overnight for peace and quiet plus seals and herons.

Have fun - and if you want to pck up a buoy as opposed to going into the marina Priors will rent you a mooring and during working hours they'll usually run you in and out in the launch or you can use the dinghy to get to their pontoon.
