Construction of the new Walton Bridge
As a result of bomb damage during the Second World War a temporary bridge has been in use at Walton since 1953. The current temporary bridge has a limited period planning permission that expires in December 2014, by which time a new permanent bridge needs to be in place.
Directions for navigation and general information during this event:
 Closures will be in place on the above times and dates for safety reasons whilst the contractors are lifting structures across the river. The contractors will be installing deck hangers and deck units on the Shepperton side of the new Walton bridge.
 There are planned contingency dates which are:
Saturday 12 January 2013
Thursday 17 and Friday 18 January 2013
Sunday 20 January to Tuesday 22 January 2013
If these contingency dates are required we will issue a further notice.

Great excitement (not)

Streaming webcam yesterday showed two cranes (can't see how enourmous they are - out of frame), with jibs pointing to the centre of the river.

Today they've got the lines and blocks ready to do something; traffic on the bridge but no visible workers on land...

Linky here

We had a temporary bridge at Aylesford which was put up by RE.It was in use for around 20 years at least, before money was scraped together for permanent jobby.

Ps.What is the airdraft on the "new" one

Latest from EA this morning re river closure:

River closures – we have been advised by Costain, who are constructing the new Walton Bridge, that they require the contingency date of Thursday 24 January 2013. They do not require the contingency date of Friday 25 January 2013.

The new bridge won't make a jot of difference to the peak traffic flow but then that isn't why it was built.
It's going to be a good looking structure particularly when they remove the other two efforts.
Hope it is going to be opened by someone interesting.:)

They spoke too soon !

Just received from EA:
River closures – we have been advised by Costain, who are constructing the new Walton Bridge, that they now require the further contingency date of Friday 25 January 2013, this is due to technical issues with the crane.
