Re: Riva\'s

Thanks Chris If Rivas sea keepings good I reckon it must be lake Como went past it once on my way to a
ski resort, thought I was back by the beach near Brighton in a force 6 for a minute given the size of the waves,
massive they were.

I think the damn thing has tides.

Re: Riva\'s

The town of Riva is on the north tip of Lake Guarda. Always wondered if the boats were built there.

Re: Riva\'s

Cut and pasted off their web site, http://www.rivaboats.com

<Founded in 1842, in Sarnico, a small northern Italian town on the banks of Lake Iseo, Riva is one of the world's oldest and most renowned shipyards. The original founder, Pietro Riva, a young fisherman and boat builder carried out repairs to storm-damaged boats which no one else could do; he built boats of exceptional quality and craftsmanship and thereby earned a reputation which laid the foundations for generations to follow.

Didn't realise it but they're owned now by Ferreti who also own Custom Line S.p.A. (maxi yacht in composite from 24 to 39 metres), Pershing S.p.A (hight performance open cruiser from 12 to 27 metres), the US company Bertram Yacht Inc. (sport fisherman motor yacht from 11 to 18 metres), CRN S.p.A (mega yacht in steel from 30 to 65 metres), Riva S.p.A. (open and flybridge motor yacht from 10 to 26 metres), and Apreamare S.p.A. (gozzo sorrentino from 7 to 16 metres).

In total Ferretti Group owns 14 boatyards - 13 of which are in Italy between Forlì and Ancona, 1 in Sarnico and 1 in Viareggio, and 1 in the United States in Miami - with a total area of more than 250,000 square metres (covered and uncovered) employing more than 1,200 people in addition to subcontractors.

Now not a lot of people know that. Bet you wish you'd never asked now eh?

Re: Riva ownership

Riva were owned by Vickers plc, who also owned RR cars, in the early 1990s. Riva was bort from Vickers by Schroder Ventures, or rather by Ferretti, who were at the time owned by SV. During SV's ownership, Ferretti also bort Pershing, Bertram, Mochi and some others. Then SV sold Ferretti in an IPO in about 1998. Then SV changed its name to Permira, and in summer 2002 it bort Ferretti back in a public-to-private takeover.

So Ferretti is today owned by Permira, and Ferretti owns Riva and Pershing. Permira also owns Homebase DIY, Sytners BMW and many other companies. They're based in Covent Garden London

"Owned by" Permira is a bit misleading. Permira is a fund manager. The fund that they manage is actually what owns Ferretti. The investors in the fund, (ie the true owners of Ferretti/Riva) are about 130 institutional investors, mostly US pension funds and endowments.

Permira is a client of mine, so I'm on best behaviour in hope of ride on silver Pershing 88 :)

Re: Riva ownership

You got most of it jfm, but I believe you missed a step. According to my employer Riva were bought from Vickers in 97 or so by Stephen Julius and Steve Heese. They are Harvard classmates whom my employer knows from the MBA program there. Heese is an American, Julius is English/Italian and has a London based firm that buys out struggling companies. Julius takes credit for coming up with the Aquariva concept before they sold Riva to Ferretti in 2000 AFTER Schroder ventures had done the Ferretti IPO but before Norberto Ferretti sold to Permira a few months ago. Julius and Heese have since bought out the Chris Craft brand and are trying to resurrect it.

Re: Riva ownership

I stand corrected aswade, apols for such a badly checked piece :)

Incidentally Riva (and indeed Chris Craft) were/are not owned by Julius/Heese per se. They were/are owned by a fund managed by those gentlemen, so the true economic owners are the investors in that fund (which would include Julius/Heese of course)
