Being in the fortunate position of just going to collect my new (to me!) Rival 32, I am now turning my attention to power requirements.

The boat will be kept on a mooring, and so my initial thought was to go for a windcharger (Rutland has had some good write-ups on this forum), but what size?

Is there an idiot's guide to tell you how to work this out? For background, the boat has 2 x 110 AH batteries, engine charging and 240V shore charger.

Alisdair, For trickle charging 220Ah on a mooring the smaller 503 would be fine I think. I also like the Rutlands; they always seem to be the first to turn and the last to stop.

OTOH if you're after maintainig a replacement charge without undue engine running then you should really work out your future power consumption (Wh) or Ah, add % for confidence/growth, and aim to supply this - maybe thro' a combination of wind (probably the 513) and solar.

Welcome to the Rival club! Do you know abot ROA? (http://www.rivalowners.org.uk)

Cheers, Ron

Ron,

Yes, I do know about ROA, and have been in touch. Although I haven't yet joined -I'll get a round tuit! Sadly the technical forum is almost moribund; I am searching for outline drawings of the interior, so I can see waht things should look like, cf my boat.

I'm inclined to go for the larger Rutland Charger because the plan is to do a bit of marina-free sailing in the West of Scotland. So I will conduct an audit using Captainslarty's excellent calculator.

Re: RIVAL 32 -ELECTRICAL AUDIT

If you have an engine with alternator for battery charge....and if you visit the boat at least once per month or more likely once per fortnight and run the engine then with a typical boat of this style you should need nothing more than the engine alternator.

I am assuming occasional use at night with cabin lights and possibly nav lights and some instruments. If you really want to boost the charge you can perhaps go to a jetty where mains power is available for a few hours to use the mains charger. But even this is probably not necessary. It is only when you run refrigeration heating or inverter that you really need lots of power
I would suggest you wait to see if your usage style is demanding on the battery/ generator system. good luck with the new boat olewill

Sorry, Olewill, didn't mention Fridge (4AH) radar and autopilot. But as a Scotsman, I'm not keen to spend money unneccesarily -is anyone? Hence my need to conduc an audit.

Alisdair, There is a copy of the R32 Brochure on ROA that includes an outline plan of the interior. Worth also posting there as many Rival anoraks will have accumulated loads of data over the years. Also worth checking the sailing mags for old boat tests. Ron
