Rising fuel costs?

Trundlebug you are right I reckon in as much as we need to weigh up the overall cost when looking at it from a holiday point of view, In my case a week on the boat is comparable with a very nice holiday abroard, I prefer the boat though in the summer, its how much it gets used and how we use it on the weekends that is changing for me. I agree Greg2, about the cost of boats but if you had bought a boat at the top end a few years back and are now trying to sell it you aint gonna wanna lose too much, but if you can buy something cheaper then it does make sense to sell your boat cheaper, the overall cost to change is similar then!

Yes, I get that and I really feel for people trying to sell and not wanting to lose a lot of money on what has probably been their pride and joy for some time. The reality is though that, IMHO, current asking prices are a bit unrealistic and will inevitably have to come down.

At £1.74 a litre for petrol on windermere it does sometimes make you think about how far you go!!

Granted you cant burn a fortune in a weekend but the more it costs in fuel the less you spend when you are there. As others have mentioned we used to eat out all of the time but have cut that right out - same with drinks in the pub. Its actually much nicer to anchor up and chill and maybe stop somewhere for a glass of something to get off the boat - whats saved in food and drink goes in the tank!

I've started to take 20 litres each weekend in a jerry can - trouble is you can easily loose that in one run out

The eventual Price of boats will depend very much on our near neighbours as it is them that have held up UK prices.

They have not seen the percentage increase in fuel, as they did not have the benefit of duty free red previously, that said with the increase in fuel costs set to continue even the bargain hunting Scandinavians are eventually going to start to consider whether boating offers the same value as it used to and when that happens the real price of a boat will become obvious.

I have felt for a long time that the 1mpg or worse boats are going to continue their depreciation for far longer than used to happen as they track a downward curve to a point that they become attractive to the middle managers living on a fixed income. If there is a finance cost involved as a monthly outgoing then the amount committed to this will have to reduce significantly in order to balance the increased fuel costs per year.
