I only repainted my (wooden) hull in April.

Will the RIR stickers mark or damage it, as id hate to have to pull her out and re-do it just because of sponsor stickers.

I note in the SI's its says "requested" rather than its "mandatory" to put them on. What do others think / do?

I've stopped applying the stickers, you don't have to have them to take part in the race. I have a blue gel coat hull and the adhesive was a nightmare to get off.

Off topic but we we're talking about the race - it looks like we might have a bit of a slow old race this year with a lack of wind currently forecast.

In your case I wouldn't.

Many events specifically exempt painted wooden hulls from having to - one I've been to allowed boats with delicate hulls but metal booms to put the sticker on the boom with the main part of the logo showing as a good compromise.

Thanks for the advice re the stickers.

This will be our first time, so all quite excited. We got caught up with the pack last year, close to Osborne bay so i am confortable with the traffic and handling the racing rules etc.

I don't want too much wind (F6+) but we really don't move well in less than 10kn, so I am hoping its windier than the current forecasts. Otherwise, we will basically be drifting with the tide! That said, if everone is drifting, we can drift as well as they can :)

I am not sure if we will go over to Cowes Friday evening and try our luck for a berth, or just get down river to Hamble Point, then go from there early Saturday. Any advice for a novice gratefully received.

PhilM,

I applied the stickers to my AWB for no more the 48 hrs last year - got rid of the residue in March this year. I won't be applying them again. I won't be drawing attention to myself or the boat by featuring in the upper half of any results list so the sponsors aren't missing out on any publicity and they may not want their name associated with my boat in any event - the Portsmouth Harbour waterline staining is already creeping up the top sides (not saying that they would feel the same about your newly painted beauty, you understand).

In terms of berthing on the Island, this year they are laying fewer mooring buoys for the RTIR and Cowes Week because of the new wave barrier and according to one conversation with the HM, there were 120 unsuccessful applicants for moorings. This year we will start from Gunwharf Quays because I didn't get my act together early enough to book a berth - about mid January seems to be the latest you can leave it. That said, I don't know whether anybody ever gets turned away.

A few years ago (2005) the winds were so light and progress so slow that off Yarmouth we were being spun on our keels and making sedate progress backwards down the West Solent, so here's hoping for just enough wind for a perfect race.

Good luck!

Mark

We too left it too late. Last year we got lucky just turning up at East Cowes on Friday evening, but everyone after us was turned away I think so don't think the odds are with us so we are going to motor up from Berthon Lymington on Saturday morning. This will be the first time we have done this (only second RTIR) so don't know how sensible this is but reckon if we leave around 5.15 and motor at 7.5 - 8 kts we should be not far short of the line when the big boys start at 6.30 so hopefully we won't cause too much mayhem and have time to ready for our 7.10 start time. Be good to hear from the more experienced/sensible if this is a really daft plan!? Mark (another one).

Cowes Friday evening for a pre-RTI berth? The very best of luck to you...

Me? I'm a cynic and after a couple of (reasonably successful) RTIs have sworn never to race a cruiser around that island again.

Around the cans racing gets my vote every time...

That's a sound plan Mark. We won't be far behind you 0740 start. Keep to the mainland side until you get beyond the start line.
