Was in our local yacht chandler and bought a small foot mounted valve to fit in the gas line at a cost of just under £9. A week or so later was in B&Q and saw virtually the same valve for about £5. Both valves were chromed plated, both had compression fittings both had two holes for mounting. As I said, ripped off again.

Duh - 'tis that you just realising why the swindleries are so called?

First check B&Q and their ilk then Screwfix et alia then caravan shops then plumbing centers etc and ONLY as a last resort go near a swindlery

I now make it a habit to find non-chandler stuff as my default search before actually going to a chandlers - and here are some recent examples.

PropODrev antifoul. Chandlers £21.00 / eBay £9.50
Teak Oil. Chandlers £11.00 / Focus DIY £1.50
VHF external aerial (stainless). Chandlers £50 / eBay £24.00
Silicon Sealant. Chandlers £10 / Focus DIY £5.00
Waterproof Rocker Switch. Chandlers £8.00 / Maplins £2.00
Windscreen Wipers (adjustable S/S). Chandlers £77.00 / Internet £15.00
Companion way piano hinge (2.0M Heavy duty S/S). Chandlers £55.00. Internet £20.00

And this list of alternative suppliers goes on and on. They are all listed in my internet favourites - especially the stainless suppliers.

Hi saw ur post and was impressed-hope this is of interest. I shopped around a lot on the net and found these people:
http://www.s3i.co.uk/swagelessterminals.php
- really helpful. The chap I spoke to recommended swaged terminals to the mast, if appropriate and using Sta-Lock or Norseman for the connection to the chain-plates. The price of their wire is very good and is 316. I am having mine done with them they fit the swaging/whatever, for the mast, I do the Stalock bit. Apparently: Chay Blyth's 14 identical 67ft yachts raced round the world with Sta-Lok rigging hardware.
Good enough recommendation I think. Best of luck, let us know how you get on Steve

Problem is the cost to find it .... if its a trip to local caravan shop / B&Q / Wickes etc. - then ok, but often the chandlers are near to the boat and no drive / cost to obtain .... so they extract a premium for this.

ME ? I have no real local chandlery - so cost to obtain from alternative supplier is ok.

Best one I saw was - Adjustable locking Hatch stays - identical items ...... 9.99 each in chandlers ....... 9.99 a PAIR in Caravan shop ...... AND the caravan shop included screws etc. OK the screws were plated crap suitable for caravan not boat ....

Often I wander around looking at camping store lights etc. ..... bought some fantastic wall lights - 12v jobs at 4.99 each ..... sadly haven't seen same again ... as they were very nice..... brass coated stem to pleated shade .... real old-fashioned style.
