Anybody attending the RIN conference on Small Craft Electronic Navigation Conference tomorrow?
Looks like an interesting line up of speakers, including the suppliers of small craft navigation systems as well as UKHO and MCA and others.
Only so much can be covered in short slots but useful window on this key area.
Looks like online as well as F2F attendance possible.

I attended on-line. A very interesting line-up of speakers and subject matter. I thought sitting at home, I might have got bored but certainly I didn't. I was interested in every talker, not necessarily happy with everything that was said but it was good that some negatives had been said. Snippets? Far too many issues to talk about I'm afraid. A sign of the successful seminar was the fact that the questioning at the end of the day had to be stopped as the clock ran out.

It was an excellent conference, covered many areas of concern from all sectors, MCA, RYA, Raymarine and CMap.

Interesting the work and concern that is going into blocking / spoofing of GPS signals and areas of concern where traditional nav is recommended.

The day was interesting and educational to get the background to decisions, the obstacles and implications of just removing the 'Not to be used for Navigation' warning. Mostly noting the differences in detail of official electronic charts - cost for UK coverage circa £30k / annum and leisure charts.

Progress is being made, my impression is the current generation of plotters will not cope (lack of memory) with the upgrade? So a new generation and an implication of vessels up to 15m will need a minimum 12" MFD screen size.

Lunch and coffee breaks allowed personal discussions and clarifications, for me clarification from the RYA regarding their 'Digital first' shorebased training reassured me after a previous conference, although still 'Digital first' it has been tempered to how I and probably most experienced navigators use electronics - 100% but with awareness and verification.

I’m not sure what detail could be missing, but if it’s a money grab then they will be sorely disappointed with the outcome of raising leisure charts costs for electronic nav. To me, this would be a safety issue as people would simply use more and more outdated charts.

Was there a justification for this? Seems fairly arbitrary and again possibly a money grab. Current gen plotters have very capable chips and output is scaled so identical regardless of screen size anyway. I can’t see what additional memory would achieve when plotters are already capable of streaming movies and other heavy tasks. The only additional features I’ve heard talked about would require kilobytes of memory to implement and nobody would use them anyway!
