Stemar has made a good suggestion. As corroboration you could ask any reputable prop manufacturer to size it for you; with a few inputs from you - the normal suspects - engine size, gear box ratio, LWL, displacement etc you will converge on the best fit.

Where you will have to make a choice concerns the number of blades - assuming you go with a fixed prop. The gofast Darrens at the club will urge two blades to reduce that awful drag, the longer in the tooth cruisers (like me, yes) will urge three blades - we just like to see the wake churning like a P & O cruiser!

Or you could part with several hundred pounds and go for a folding type and watch the log just soar away under sail - er?

Propping a boat is one of the great pleasures in (this sailing) life.

Good luck,

Peter Gibbs

There are a number of prop-sizing programs available that will give you an idea, but if you are actually wanting to buy then I would recommend going to a reputable supplier and following their recommendation. That way they have an obligation to make sure the prop does what you want.

Lancing Marine will tell you the best prop size and configuration for you and your boat (i.e 2 or 3 bladed - they wll know the merits of each), and supply it for you. Unlike a theoretical programme they KNOW what works best from many years experience.
