Hello everyone, I have just been given a tired looking Leisure 17 if this make rings any bells with anyone? She has alot of green stuff growing on her fibreglass cabin and a hull part sanded with lots of flaking anti-foul. After dragging her over a mile and half of forest track I beheld this thing squtting next to some very big yatchs in the boat yard. Can anyone advise on the best way to clean her and apply new anti-foul? thats before I look at the mast and outboard of course!

Welcome to the forums.

Congratulations on acquiring one of the best 17footers around. the best maybe.

Generally clean up with water and elbow grease i would say but maybe an algicide will help get rid of the green stuff. If the hull is sound don't worry too much about the state of the anti-fouling. scrub clean, scrape off the loose stuff and recoat .you can always go to town on it later if needed. (Remember it is toxic so don't sand it dry.

There is an active owners association http://www.leisureowners.org.uk/site/contents/home.shtml which you would do well to join. I know the Commodore, Barri Hopkins, a former Seawych owner,

hi
give her a good clean with a pressure washer. clen off all the old antfoul, carfully with a scraper Wear a mask & protective overalls & gloves, if scraper doesnt work try antifoul remover from chandlers ( cant remember its name) sur some one here will.
Glad you have got a great little boat i had one for years traveled miles. The selling point for these was one was sailed accross the atlantic singlehanded. Tere is a very good & supportive owners association, worth joining. They can offer a great deal of advice & support with replacement parts etc. pm me if you want any further help.

I remember seeing the boat that crossed the Atlantic in pride of place at the London Boat Show but cannot recall what year it was. I had a mirror dinghy at the time and this 17 footer with bunks a cooker and a chemical toilet was the stuff of dreams. The standard version was about £560 and the delux with curtains, fabric cushion covers and one or two other bits was about £620. I ended up with a secondhand Lysander for £150 and had just as much fun.

Found my L17 in a back garden in Basingstoke where it had lain under trees for 5 years. It was just like yours, covered with green algae and it appeared baked on. A pressure-washer took it all off in an hour. Here she was, 3 months later after a lot of elbowgrease - a great little boat that was my first 'sleepaboard'. Loved it.
