Hi all, hope you'll help...

I have a Freeman 32, which for the non-cognoscenti, has a half-wheelhouse of GRP sandwich construction. A previous owner fitted a vinyl headlining, which I am now removing (to the accompaniment of much expletive on acccount of the foul mixture of old adhesive, dried foam, etc, found beneath the vinyl!).

Now, when it is gone, I'll need to paint the fibreglass behind. Mostly, there is gelcoat; in some areas, the gelcoat is thin and the mat is just in evidence.

I need a paint which will look great, adhere to the existing surface (not easy to prepare it perfectly, though priming is a possibility), and repell moisture. I had thought of using Hammerite as it seems to stick happily to anything and keeps a good appearance, though I'm unsure about its predeliction for condensation.

Any ideas?

sounds wierd but vinyl emulsion works well. prepare by washing with sugar soap solution (wear protection when working overhead). i used b&q gloss for the same job on my boat. the fact that it doesn't get direct sun means you don't nead expensive marine products.

Emulsion?

You've set me off thinking. It's actually pretty good stuff.

I've got a Victorian house with a bay window. 10 years ago my wife & I got all enthusiastic and individually painted the flowers at the top of the pillars around the bay using whatever paints we had to hand, including emulsion. We then sprayed clear cellulose laquer over the emulsion to seal it.

Anyway, 10 years on, the emulsion is in pristine condition despite being on the most exposed part of the bay. We've had to repaint much of the oil paints in the intervening 10 years though - where the colours had faded or the paint peeled.

Regards

Richard

I would use white International bilge paint. It is really good stuff, covers well, dries quick and leaves a very durable surface. I am not sure you will find any paint which prevents condensation.

G'day Alpha,

Flow coat as uses in locker bases and the bilge, goes on thick and covers a multitude of sins, has a smooth easy to clean surface, and water / condensate will not worry it.
