I have Mistral 22' it was built in '75 I intend to replace the standing rigging, the original rigging is solid stainless wire +/- 4mm in diameter I'm unsure wether I should replace it with the same "solid" wire or go for the more common woven strand type. Any suggestions on which type would be "better"?

Hi, The rigging which you describe sounds like Rod rigging...Stainless rod? This was a popular racing rig. If you are unsure of the age it's needs to be attended to. I think your options are 1. Get the current rigging tested. There have been articles on this in the past in various periodicals...Can't remember which!
2. Replace. However as I recall riggers used to use different criteria for wire and rod. The angle subtended between the line of the mast and the cap shroud should not be less than 10 degrees for wire. 8 degrees for rod...

Best discuss with your local rigger. Good Luck!!

Rod rigging

On a race boat with the ability to check its integrity annually (using flourised dyes, ultra sound scans or even xrays, etc), rod rigging has its place. Saves weight and windage etc. But on cruising boats where some indication of failure is appreciated and reduced cost even more so, then it may not be required.
