Mast down this year trying to set the rig up from scratch (Frac rig, one set of swept back spreaders, no runners, continous cap shrouds). Discovered that where the spreader tips have been tightend onto the shroud I've got different lengths above the spreaders.

So now trying to fix the shrouds onto the end of the spreaders.... Problem is that I've got to have the same shroud angle above and below the spreader tip to ensure even loading.

How do I do that when the mast is on the side of the dock and I've got no tension on the shrouds?

Fin.

PS Half time score looks good!

If memory serves correct rig tension needs an extension of about 2.5mm per metre length of wire. This would mean that on an 8 metre wire you will be stretching it by 20mm overall. If say 40% of the length is above the spreader then as you tension the spreader end will drop about 8 mm.

Now that you know this if you know the horizontal distance between the deck fixings you can accurately calculate the angles above and below, given the drop created by tensioning but I don't think it's really that critical!

Yes good gen but for really making life easy then a loos guage (all speelling mistakes are alchohol induced!) is the way ahead. Measuring tension when the rig is up isn't a snag. It's working out spreader angle/deflection when its on the shore that has been winding me up!

Yours, in a haze, Fin.

If I was in your situation I would be taking measurements and drawing the rig to scale on a sheet of paper, then getting out the protractor. When in doubt, go back to basics.

The main thing is that you have the spreader angled slightly upwards, the best way of achieving this is with a piece of ply cut out to the required angle and offering up between spreader and mast. Once the masrt is up you can go up in the chair and check and if slightly out give it a thump with your hand.
